Box Score DELAND, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's basketball program played Stetson to its first overtime game of the season Wednesday evening, where it dropped a 57-47 decision at the Edmunds Center.
With two minutes left to play, the Dolphins missed on a game-tying layup and it quickly transitioned into seven unanswered Hatter points. The contest featured nine lead changes and four ties before the missed opportunity.
Christin Mercer finished the evening with a game-high 18 points while Jasmyn Brown recorded 14 with six rebounds.
Staring the 10th tie of the night in the eyes, Jacksonville missed a layup in overtime that would have locked things at 46-all. Instead, the Hatters pushed it down court to find Brianti Saunders for a three-pointer. She singlehandedly embarked on a 7-0 run until Mercer's trey with 51 seconds left.
The basket marked the Dolphins' final score of the evening.
"We turned the ball over too much," said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to score. I also think when you're on the road, you have to make free-throws and layups. Luckily, I've seen this story before. We'll focus on getting better these next five games and ready for the tournament."
The shot selection was there, but the attempts weren't falling as the Dolphins dug themselves into an early 11-point hole. Fortunately for JU, the tides turned late in the second quarter with the Hatters entering halftime on a five-minute scoring drought.
Brown swished a midrange jumper just before the break to close the visitor's deficit to 19-16.
Though the Hatters hopped out to a double-digit advantage at the midpoint of the third period, they finished the frame up by one, 32-31, as Brown and Mercer accounted for seven points in a 9-2 JU run.
Mercer earned the Dolphins their first lead since the opening quarter on an uncontested lay-in at the 9:08 mark, and the sides swapped five leads thereafter.
Brittney Chambers swished a corner three with 1:17 remaining to give Stetson a 43-41 advantage, and a Shalonda Neely offensive rebound turned into a Mercer layup on the other end of the floor.
The Hatters called a timeout with 30 seconds left in regulation and Chambers missed at the buzzer to force the extra period.
Neely recorded six rebounds with two points and two assists and Sherranda Reddick added six points, five rebounds and four steals.
Jacksonville (17-7, 6-3 ASUN Conference) returns to the court Saturday at 1 p.m. versus the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
