JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville softball featured an all-around effort on day one of the Green & Gold Classic as the Dolphins showed their defensive prowess in a 3-2 victory over Cleveland State and combined for 19 hits in an offensively powered 14-3 win over St. Bonaventure in game two, Saturday afternoon at Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
"We played hard defensively all day," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "Any time your defense plays well behind your pitcher, it gives you a chance to stay in ball games and that's exactly what we did. They made all the routine plays and some tough ones, too."
vs. Cleveland State
A two-out two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, capped by a walk-off double from Jacqueline Hodskins to bring Madison Ragan in for the game-winner, gave the Dolphins (15-9) a tournament-opening victory, 3-2. Ragan reached on an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2 with two outs to set Hodskins up for the game-winner.
"I've been getting frustrated lately and Coach Steele kept telling me to trust the process and don't make the moment bigger than it is. I just went up there and took my hack," said Hodskins. "It all comes down to trusting my preparation, knowing I can do it, and believing in myself."
"Jaci works so hard; she's easy to cheer for, but she just hasn't been getting production," added Steele. "I pulled her aside at the start of the inning and told her to trust the process and have a little fun with it. For her to get her first hit in a walk-off win was huge."
Cleveland State (1-18) struck early on back-to-back RBI singles up the left side to get two runs in the top of the first.
Jacksonville was able to get a run back in the bottom of the third after Madison Ragan drove the ball in to left center to plate Heather Roberts, who reached on a double to the same spot.
The Dolphins had a chance to rally in the bottom of the fourth, but the Vikings' defense was able to quash the opportunity.
"We never took ourselves out of it emotionally; we stayed calm and collected and that helped us spark the rally in the seventh," added Steele.
Ragan threw 4.2 innings and struck out three and Taylor Thorpe (7-2) earned the win on the mound with 2.1 innings of work.
vs. St. Bonaventure
Heather Roberts had home runs in back-to-back innings to lead the Dolphins' 19-hit affair against the Bonnies (4-12).
"The first pitch was down the middle and I was swinging," said Roberts. "We were all seeing the ball really well."
"[Roberts] rises to the occasion when necessary," added Steele. "I think she had enough and she put us on her back in the first inning and sparked it."
Jacksonville didn't allow St. Bonaventure's early 1-0 lead to hold them back as Roberts began a two-out rally in the bottom of the first, starting with her first home run over the left center wall. Singles from Ragan and Makenzie Buss continued the offensive threat as Kristen Griffith and Carolyn O'Neal both drove in runs for a 3-1 Jacksonville lead.
A six-run second inning propelled the Dolphins ahead, 9-1. Leadoff hitter Allie McCourt was able to score on a throwing error by the Bonnie left fielder with no outs to carry the Green and White's momentum. Roberts added a two-run shot to the palm trees in dead center and Ragan followed up with a four-bagger of her own to force St. Bonaventure to bring Sam Wood to the mound.
The pitching change couldn't stop the rolling Dolphins as an RBI double from Griffith brought in Buss and Jordan Daniels brought in Griffith on a shot to left field for the final run of the inning.
Daniels and McCourt added RBI singles and Danielle Baker and Roberts took ball four with the bases loaded to round out the Dolphins' four-run third inning.
Buss took advantage of her speed and was able to scoot home as the Bonnies turned a 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the fourth; however, St. Bonaventure was able to end the inning without further damage.
St. Bonaventure's Alexandra Piergustavo drove in two runs on a double down the left field line in the top of the fifth, but relief pitcher Blaise Brooks was able to catch the last Bonnie swinging to end the game.
Added Roberts, "Our defense shut it down. Alyssa [Bilodeau] did really well. We gave up one run in the first inning, but after that we eliminated their ability to get on base and make something happen. If we're able to carry it over to tomorrow, that momentum will really help us win."
Alyssa Bilodeau improved to 5-5 on the mound with 3.0 innings of work, while Seana Mora (1.1 IP) and Brooks (0.2 IP) both saw time in the circle.
Seventeen Dolphins saw time on the diamond or at the plate in the win. "As a coach, it's one of my favorite things to be able to be creative with our lineup and get a team win," Steele remarked.
Ragan and Buss led the Dolphins as the duo both finished 5-for-7 at the plate. Ragan had a double, a home run, and three RBI, while Buss added stolen base. Roberts (3-for-6, 4 RBI) and Hodskins (3-for-5, 2 RBI) had three hits each.
The Dolphins return to the diamond tomorrow for a rematch with St. Bonaventure at 11:30 a.m. and face Cleveland State at 2:00 p.m.
