JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville softball had another huge day at the plate with 23 hits, including two home runs and a grand slam, as the Dolphins split on day two of the Green & Gold Classic with a 3-2 loss to St. Bonaventure and a 13-5 six-inning victory over Cleveland State, Sunday.
"We did a great job bouncing back after a tough loss in the morning, so I'm very proud of our ability to not be emotional going into the second game of the day," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "I was proud of our fight all weekend."
vs. St. Bonaventure
A late, two-run Dolphin rally wasn't enough to overcome St. Bonaventure's 3-0 lead in a pitchers' duel in game one as the Bonnies edged Jacksonville, 3-2.
Jordan Daniels hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in JU's first run and an Allie McCourt infield single brought in Ciara Jones with two outs. A fly out to center ended the inning.
"To see your team fight for the win late is a great sign," added Steele.
St. Bonaventure (6-12) was able to push three runs across the plate on four hits before the Dolphins could get out of the top of the seventh and counter with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman Seana Mora continued to shine on the mound and had a no-hitter through six innings of work, but ultimately fell to 1-1 in the circle.
"[Mora] looked great in her outing on Wednesday and I thought she could keep St. Bonaventure's bats at bay, and she did," said Steele. "She pitched a great game, but momentum is a funny thing. [St. Bonaventure] had all the momentum going into the top of the seventh. "
vs. Cleveland State
Three Dolphin home runs, including a grand slam from Danielle Baker, highlighted the Dolphins' 16-hit, six-inning victory over Cleveland State in game two, 13-5.
Jacksonville had runs in all but the first inning to shut down the Vikings (1-20).
Cleveland State struck first in the top of the second, getting a run in on a single to left center, but it didn't take long for the Dolphins to answer back.
With the bases loaded and one out, Baker blasted a ball to the palm trees in left field and quickly erased the deficit. Heather Roberts drove in Jones, who reached on a Viking error, for the final Dolphin run of the inning.
Jacksonville added two more in the third as Madison Ragan led off with a solo shot to center field for a 6-1 Dolphin advantage. Daniels used heads-up base running with two outs to scoot home after Baker sent the ball into center field and distracted the Viking fielders by gunning for second.
Roberts had the lone Dolphin run in the fourth on a solo dinger to center field with two outs.
The Vikings showed grit in the top of the fifth, however, and were able to get four runs across on a two-run double, a sacrifice hit, and a single into right field, but the Dolphins quickly stopped the damage to head to the bottom of the inning.
Jacqueline Hodskins drove in Daniels on a right field single and a two-run double from Carolyn O'Neal sent two more Dolphins across the plate. Two more Dolphins came home in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Hodskins and the game-ending RBI single from McCourt for the final 13-5 decision.
Alyssa Bilodeau threw 4.1 innings of work and struck out three to improve to 6-5 on the mound.
McCourt finished the day 5-for-9 at the plate with two RBI and two stolen bases. Roberts, an All-Tournament pick, was 4-for-7 with two RBI, a home run, and a stolen base. Roberts also caught a Viking stealing.
The Dolphins head to Tampa, Fla. Wednesday, March 15 for a doubleheader with Yale at 2:30 p.m. and South Florida at 5:00 p.m.
