FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite scoring a run in the top of the seventh to halve its deficit, Jacksonville softball fell in the series finale at Florida Gulf Coast, 4-2, Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins fall to 21-14 on the season and 1-2 in the ASUN Conference.

"It was a very evenly matched series," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "We were flat going into today's game. There was so much fight and fire yesterday, and we didn't have that today. We have to combine the emotional side of the game with the softball side of the game and that's going to require leadership from our veteran players to ensure that that doesn't happen again."

After the Eagles (20-14, 2-1 ASUN) took advantage of a Dolphin error with two outs in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead, Danielle Baker countered in the top of the second with a leadoff single to shallow right center.

Baker stole second and, after the ball popped out of the Eagle second baseman's glove, took third as well with one out. Makenzie Buss hit a sacrifice fly out to right field that allowed Baker to tag up and tie the game at 1-1.

FGCU retook the lead in the bottom of the third after a double down the left line brought in the leadoff Eagle, who reached on an infield single and stole second. Two more Eagle runs came in in the bottom of the fourth for FGCU to take a 4-1 lead.

With two on and two outs in the top of the seventh, Ciara Jones drove in Buss, who reached on a single to center field, to bring the Dolphins within 4-2. However, the Eagles came out victorious after a ground out to the pitcher left Jacksonville with runners on the corners at the end of the game.

Jones finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Baker (1-for-3), Buss (1-for-2), and Kristen Griffith (1-for-3) all collected hits. Madison Ragan threw 3.2 innings and falls to 5-4 in the circle.

The Dolphins continue ASUN Conference play Saturday, April 1 and Sunday April 2 for a three-game series with Lipscomb at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. Saturday game times are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., while Sunday's game will start at 12:00 p.m.
