Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There's nothing like a pitchers' duel to cap off a great series between two well-matched ball clubs and with two extra-inning, walk-off wins yesterday to capture the last spot in the ASUN Conference Tournament, Jacksonville softball finished the regular season with a bang … and it took extra innings to do it. Despite a combined 28 hits between the two games yesterday, the Dolphins only needed four to sweep Stetson, 2-1, in eight innings Sunday afternoon at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
Jacksonville finishes the regular season with a 30-23 record and an 8-10 record in ASUN play and for the first time since 2013, the Dolphins finish the season with at least 30 wins.
"To finish the season with our first conference sweep is going to give us a lot of momentum going into the conference tournament next week," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "Stetson is a great ball club, so to be able to [sweep the weekend] with our backs up against the wall is no easy feat. We found a way to win and it was a very different way than yesterday, but that's what it's going to take. Whether we get double-digit hits, or whether we need a pitcher to throw a gem and to play good defense behind her, we'll be able to figure it out."
After the first two Dolphins grounded out in the bottom of the eighth, Allie McCourt bunted for a single to get on base. The speedy junior from Long Valley, N.J. then stole second for her 33rd stolen base of the year to become the program's new single-season stolen base leader. The previous record of 32 was set in 2012 by Kayla Oulett. McCourt also played a pivotal role in helping the 2017 Dolphins achieve something no other team in program history has done – steal at least 100 bases in a season; this year's team has stolen 110.
With McCourt on second, Heather Roberts was intentionally walked and Kristen Griffith battled to a 3-2 count to draw a walk and load the bases. Bethany Kursch then hit into a fielder's choice to shortstop that allowed McCourt to score and end the game with the Dolphins ahead, 2-1.
Stetson (26-21, 4-14 ASUN) took an early 1-0 lead after Kelsey Waters hit a solo home run in the top of the first.
Jacksonville struck back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI infield single from Ciara Jones. Jones' hit brought in Makenzie Buss, who reached on a Hatter fielding error with one out and stole both second and third to get into scoring position.
Tied at one with a Hatter on third in the top of the eighth, the Dolphins found themselves in a jam. With two outs, freshman pitcher Seana Mora kept her cool and needed just three pitches to get the batter out swinging and send her teammates to the plate.
Mora threw her third complete game of the year and struck out four to improve to 4-3 in the circle. Stetson's Tori Perkins allowed four hits and no earned runs in 7.2 innings.
Jones (1-for-4) led the team with an RBI, while McCourt (1-for-4), Jacqueline Hodskins (1-for-2), and Kamille Larrabee (1-for-3) all had hits for the Dolphins.
"Every team that we're going to see [in the tournament], we've seen before and we've taken a win from them; that gives us great confidence," Steele added. "If you stay in the winner's bracket, you only need to win one game a day. We will try to take it one pitch at a time. We're excited to get North Florida in the first round; it was a good series when we went over there and we can't look past them. We're going to prepare the best we can. The key is going to be finding a way to bottle up all of the momentum from this weekend and take that with us to Tennessee."
With its sweep of Stetson yesterday, the Dolphins received the #6 seed and the final spot in the ASUN Conference Tournament. The Dolphins will face #3 North Florida Wednesday, May 10 in Nashville, Tenn. at 3:00 p.m. CST.
