Dolphins Fall In Season's First Road Contest

Box Score

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.- Playing in their first regular season road match since October 15, 2016, the Jacksonville women's soccer team came up short to College of Charleston, 4-0.

Collecting their third consecutive win, the Cougars began their offensive on the Dolphins immediately, as Rachel Kim scored in the game's 4th minute. C of C struck again in the 27th minute, with Laura Ortega making the strike from inside the box, sending the Cougars to halftime with a 2-0 advantage. Following close shot attempts by Rachel Henry and Sope Akindoju early in the second half, College of Charleston's Ali Frietas added the team's third score of the season in the 65th minute of action. Katrina Koomen crossed a ball to the far side of the net in the 73rd minute to give the Cougars their fourth point of the game.

"We lacked the sharpness today that was needed to get a better result," Head Coach Brian Copham said. "Defensively, our decision making and marking have to be better to eliminate goal scoring chances and goals."

Unable to keep up with C of C's swift play, the Dolphins were outshot 22-8 in the contest, including 12-3 in shots taken on goal. Joëlle d'Entremont led the team's offensive efforts with four shot attempts, giving the senior captain a team-leading 27 in 2017.

"In the attack, we have to push to create more dangerous chances and finish the ones we do create," Copham said.

JU's goalkeepers were kept busy in the affair, making a season-high eight saves. Junior Brittany Hundley notched her fourth consecutive start in goal for the 'Phins, playing nearly 73 minutes, and making a career-high seven saves. Sophomore Micaela MacKay entered the contest in its 73rd minute, making one save in the final 17:06. Hundley's record as a starter drops to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

"Britt made a couple of very nice saves," Copham concluded. "In the end, we have to do better marking in front of her to reduce chances. We look forward to getting a full week of training in, and prepping for conference play."

With the defeat, the Dolphins wrap up non-conference play with a 2-5 record, while the Cougars improve to 5-3.

Following a pair of weekend, non-conference contests, Jacksonville now turns its attention to the start of the 2017 ASUN campaign, which kicks off this weekend. The Dolphins will begin conference play hosting the 2017 River City Rumble against rival North Florida, which is slated for Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
