JAMAICA – When first year head coach Laura Kane took over the Jacksonville University women's soccer team in the fall she targeted Hubert Busby Jr. as an assistant coach to guide the program's goalkeepers. In October, Busby helped guide Jamaica's national team to its first-ever Women's World Cup Berth as the team's goalkeeping coach.
Jamaica's women's national team defeated Panama 4-2 on penalty kicks after tying the South American nation 2-2 in regulation in the third place match at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. The win also makes Jamaica the first Caribbean nation ever to qualify for the Women's World Cup.
"The technical staff and I are truly proud of what these young women have been able to accomplish," Busby Jr. said. "This grueling three year journey of hard work and determination has been rewarded with them qualifying for The World Cup. Against the odds they have inspired a generation of future players World Wide, who can now believe, that the impossible is in fact possible. We have a lot of hard work still to do, but we are excited about the future"
The coaching staff late in that match made a goalkeeper switch during extra time and that keeper went on to make a critical save during penalty shots with the tally already knotted 2-2. Joining Jamaica, the 64th ranked team in the world, in the World Cup from this event will be the United States and Canada.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have someone on our staff who is being recognized on the international stage," Kane added. "We will continue to support Hubie and the Jamaican Women's National Team as they prepare for their first-ever appearance in the Women's World Cup."
Busby Jr.'s first year with the Jacksonville staff may not have ended with the record they were hoping for but his efforts guiding the goalkeeper staff should not go unnoticed. He helped guide Brittany Hundley to one of the greatest individual season's in program history. She ended up leading the ASUN in saves and was an All-Conference nominee.
