Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball rebounded with a Day Two sweep during the Dolphin Invitational on Saturday at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. The Dolphins began the day with a 5-1 win over Canisius. A solo home run by Jordan Daniels in the second inning lifted JU to a 1-0 victory against Providence.
"I'm very, very proud with how the team responded," said head coach Erica Ayers. "We got two great pitching outings from Alyssa and Haley. We played pretty solid defense. Offensively, we are not hitting to what we are capable of. But being able to scratch runs and win ball games when you are not swinging at your best is a testament to how tough these kids are and how hard they play."
vs. Canisius
JU scored one run in five of the six innings that the Dolphins batted.
Danielle Baker drove in the game's first run, bringing home Allie McCourt from second base in the first inning.
In the second inning, McCourt was responsible for helping the Dolphins go up 2-0 as her double down the left field line brought in Makenzie Buss.
After a scoreless third inning, JU took advantage of Canisius errors in each of the next two innings to tack on additional runs. In the fourth, a Canisius throwing error sent Buss running home to make it a 3-0. Then in the fifth, Katelin Davis got home on a throwing miscue and JU went up 4-0.
With runners on second and third, Madison Ragan sent a deep sac fly to right field that scored Baker.
Canisius ended the Dolphins' shutout bid by scoring a run in the seventh with a hit to left field.
Alyssa Bilodeau improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing just one run off five hits in 7.0 innings. Bilodeau also struck out six.
Six Dolphins recorded one hit during the game.
vs. Providence
With one out and down on a 1-2 court, Daniels drilled a solo shot that landed just behind the left field wall for the game's only run.
A solid defense kept Providence from scoring. The Friars threatened in the seventh inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, a ball was hit directly to Baker, who stepped on second base for the final out.
Haley Holloway earned her first win of the season after pitching 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, Bilodeau was credited with her first save as she threw the final 0.1 of the game.
Seven Dolphins each had one hit.
JU closes out the Dolphin Invitational on Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. game against UT-Arlington at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
