Dolphins Blank UT-Arlington to Finish Play at Dolphin Invitational

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two runs in the bottom of the third was all it took as Jacksonville University softball finished play at its own Dolphin Invitational with a 2-0 shutout of UT-Arlington on Sunday at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.

"I'm proud about the at-bats we put together. Their pitching staff is tough and was giving people fits all weekend," said head coach Erica Ayers. "We followed our plan, battled against two strikes, and got it done. I'm super proud of the kids for bouncing back after a tough Friday and putting together three wins in a row to finish the weekend."

The Dolphins took advantage of two Maverick throwing errors to advance runners around the bases. Pinch runner Carolyn O'Neal made it over to second base on one of the miscues and then reached third as Allie McCourt sent a base hit to right field. O'Neal initially stayed on third as McCourt stole second, but an errant throw by the Mavericks allowed O'Neal to score the game's first run. The error also gave McCourt the opportunity to advance to third.

In the next at-bat, Danielle Baker sent a sacrifice fly to right field in order to bring home McCourt to make it 2-0.

Jacksonville displayed strong fielding defense for the remainder of the game. Although UT-Arlington had four hits in the last four innings it batted, the Mavericks only saw a runner make it over to second once.

Both McCourt and Madison Ragan were 2-for-3 from the plate.

Alyssa Bilodeau tossed a completed-game shutout in order to go to 3-1 on the season.

"Alyssa threw a great ball game" said Ayers. "I was really happy to see her be able to throw three days in a row, and come back against the same team she saw on Friday and still get the shutout. That's huge for her progress. That's tough to do."

Jacksonville takes the field again on Friday when the Dolphins host the three-day Green & Gold Classic and the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. The Dolphins play two games on Friday, facing Western Carolina at 5 p.m., and then Penn State at 7:30 p.m.
