Box Score OMAHA, Neb. - Jacksonville men's soccer (1-8, 1-0 ASUN) took on #9 Creighton (6-1-1, 2-0 Big East) in a Tuesday night non-conference match, falling 2-1 to the Bluejays after fighting their way back into the match late.
A chippy first half saw neither team able to score, much to the credit of Matt Levy's efforts in goal. The freshman faced eight Creighton shots during the half and recorded three saves to shutout the Bluejay attack.
On the other end Creighton's keeper was challenged by Jacksonville's Steven Saunders and Jose Manzo, who each rattled off well placed shots. Manzo's was deflected and ricocheted off the post.
Jacksonville caught a break early in the second half when redshirt sophomore Connor Lufkin stepped in front of a shot and made the deflection in front of the Dolphins' goal. In the 60th minute, however, Creighton created an opportunity as Sven Koenig broke away from defenders and got one past Levy, giving the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
11 minutes later Koenig struck again for his second unassisted goal of the match, but it wasn't long before Jacksonville struck back. In the 75th minute Jose Manzo's free kick was tapped by Bryson Pink, then put through by Alex Dixon to bring the deficit back to one. It was Dixon's second goal of the season, and Manzo's third assist in four days.
With under three minutes remaining in the match Creighton worked a 3-on-1 opportunity looking for the dagger, but Levy made the unlikely save. Creighton had another chance at it, but Manzo was there to back up his keeper and blocked the ball out of bounds.
The Dolphins would have at least two more chances coming from a pair of corner kicks that were nearly headed in for the equalizer, but time expired on the comeback attempt. Levy ended his night with seven saves. Creighton was the fourth nationally ranked opponent the 'Phins have faced this season.
Jacksonville returns to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 29 for an ASUN showdown with NJIT. That match will be played at Southern Oak Stadium at 7 PM.
