PONTIAC, Mich. – The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team (2-1) was unbeatable on Sunday afternoon opposite Detroit Mercy (0-4). The Dolphins scored six times in the first five minutes and never looked back as they dispatched Detroit, 22-4, to earn their second win of the season.
The path to success ran through
Jenny Kinsey and
Sarah Elms, as it has all season to this point. Kinsey scored three goals and handed out three assists while Elms exploded for six goals. The dynamic pair has combined to score 22 goals through the first three games, and each have 11. Kinsey's trio of assists on Sunday pushes her total for the year to four and into the team lead with 15 points.
Mackenzie Boyle not only scored the first goal of her collegiate career but added a third hat trick for JU.
Alyssa Arnold, reigning ASUN Defensive Player of the Week
Molly Brock and
Julia Kolderman each scored twice while
Olivia Alvarez,
Madeline Cloyd,
Megan Prescott and
Kasey Stevens each scored once. Arnold and Kolderman both added three assists to their ledger while
Parker Day assisted the first goal, just 45 seconds into the game.
As good as the Dolphins were on offense, they were just as good on the other end of the field. Kinsey led the team with three ground balls while nine different players each caused a turnover.
Addy Tysdal started in the crease and made one save.
Sharn Muffett relieved Tysdal between the pipes after 20 minutes and made three saves before
Dayna Martinetto handled net-minding over the last 20 minutes, making one save.
Elms and Kinsey did most of their damage early and often. Kinsey scored first but Elms canned the next three for JU before Kinsey book ended the effort at the 26:07 mark, giving Jacksonville a 5-1 advantage. Kinsey's goal proved to be the game winner.
Molly Brock broke up the Elms and Kinsey show with her score at the 24-minute mark followed by a fourth from Elms, Arnold's first and Kinsey's third with 18:11 to go. Arnold added another with 15 minutes left in the half and Prescott scored less than two minutes later to make it 11-2.
Elms canned her fifth goal of the game to get the running clock started at the 10:42 mark and JU added two more scores before the break to take a 14-2 advantage into halftime. Stevens scored the 13th goal and Boyle scored her first collegiate goal at the 3:53 mark to wrap up the half.
Eight more goals followed in the second half as the Dolphins cruised to a 22-4 victory. This is the first game of 20 or more goals for the Dolphins this season after accomplishing that feat on 11 occasions in 2019.
After this quick road trip, Jacksonville now has eight-straight games at home to look forward too and won't be back on the road again until Apr. 9 when the team travels to Coastal Carolina.
