Hatters Score Late in The Second Half to Defeat Dolphins

DeLand, Fla. - Jacksonville's men's soccer team (2-7-0, 1-2-0 ASUN) took a close 1-0 loss to ASUN opponent Stetson (4-4-2, 2-1-0 ASUN), to earn its seventh loss of the season. After a solid performance by both teams, the Hatters scored late in the second period and held on to escape with the victory.

The first 45 minutes of play was narrated by solid defensive performances from both teams.

As the clock began, the Hatters put the ball in play and the JU defense immediately kicked into gear. Stetson took the first shot attempt at the seven minute mark, but the ball went right into the hands of JU's starting goalkeeper, Jabari Gray. Two minutes later the Hatters attempted a shot once again, but would send the ball over the top of the goal. During minute 13, Reed Davis made the first shot attempt for the Dolphins followed by an attempt from Jake Duncan-Smith, but both would be unsuccessful as the Hatters keeper prevented JU from getting onto the board.

Through the next 20 minutes of action, the ball continued to roll across the field due to both team's stellar defense prohibiting any shot attempts. Stetson managed to rattle off one more shot at the 35 minute mark, but would miss launching the ball inside the goal once more. Both the Dolphins and the Hatters exited the field with a score of zero after the first half.

Solid defense remained intact through the beginning of the second period. Through the first ten minutes of play neither team managed a shot attempt to take the lead, and the game remained quiet on offense. Breaking the silence at the 59 minute mark, Stetson attempted three shots across a five minute span, but it would only lead to Gray tallying another save to his record.

To make a slight adjustment to the score, Stetson's Lewis Scattergood found the left corner of the goal and launched the ball past the goalkeeper to take the 1-0 lead. In the remaining minutes of the half, Zach Blice, Inti Antunez and Davis all attempted to put JU on the board, but would ultimately come up short. Stetson was able to hold onto the leada and walk off its home turf with the close victory.

Next, the Dolphins continue on the road with a stop in Lynchburg, Virginia, to compete against Liberty (5-3-0, 2-0-0 ASUN) on Friday Oct. 8. Kickoff against the Flames is set for 6:00 p.m.
