Dolphins Hold Knights To A Scoreless Draw In Final Regular Season Contest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jacksonville's men's soccer team (3-10-1, 2-4-1 ASUN) held the Bellarmine Knights (6-7-2, 2-4-1 ASUN) to a scoreless draw, after a stellar 110 minute defensive performance. This marks the first scoreless draw the program has earned since this past February, when the Dolphins tied the College of Charleston at Southern Oak Stadium.

The first half began in a back-and-forth fashion, as the ball made its way evenly across the field. At the 16 minute mark, Bellarmine took the first shot attempt of the match, which landed right into the hands of JU's starting goalkeeper, Matt Levy. After the Knights shot attempt, the play resumed to the alternating style it started with. In the last three minutes of the half, Jake Duncan-Smith took the first shot attempt for the Dolphins, which was also saved by the Bellarmine keeper. Through an intense defense-driven first half, the clock ran out of time and the teams retreated to the locker rooms with the score tied at zero.

Once the teams returned to the field, Bellarmine came out stronger than in the first. During the first minute of action, the Knights took its second shot attempt where the ball would just scrape the outside of the goal. At the 51 minute mark, Bellarmine took back-to-back shots that were blocked by the Dolphins. In response, Max Pencak ran away with the ball and pursued the net, but it would only lead to another save for the Knights' goalkeeper.

Despite the three failed shot attempts to start the second half, Bellarmine kept up the momentum. Across the next 15 minutes of play, the Knights rattled off three more attempts, giving Levy the opportunity to record two more saves. Cole Reasonover broke up the Knights' run with a shot at the 70 minute mark, followed by attempts from Josh Araujo-Wilson and Reed Davis, who would all fall short of launching the  ball in the back of the net. To round out the half, the Knights seeked one more try to get onto the board but were unsuccessful and an overtime period became necessary.

During the first overtime period Bellarmine went straight to work, attempting three shots over a two minute span. This led Levy to his fourth and fifth saves of the game. JU answered with back-to-back attempts by Olivier Correa and Davis, both of which were blocked by the Knights defenders. At the 99 minute mark, Cao Chaves proceeded to get close to the goal but sent the ball into the hands of the Knight's goalkeeper. Zeros still remained on the scoreboard and a second overtime period was required.

The final overtime period was the exact opposite of the first. JU's Nil Ringstrand took the only shot attempt of the period and the final shot of the game at the 106 minute mark, and missed just high above the goal. Once the clock hit zero, the teams exited the field with a tie.

Since JU tied the Knights and the Liberty Flames won its match against North Florida, the Dolphins have officially been knocked out of the postseason. JU will return to the field in the fall of 2022.
