Another Strong Day for Women's Rowing at George Mason Invite

FAIRFAX, Va. – Jacksonville University women's rowing turned in another strong performance in its final tune-up before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship.

The Dolphins had several winning performances at the George Mason Invite on Saturday at Sandy Run Regional Park, a day earlier than originally scheduled due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday.

"Although racing got moved up due to weather coming in Sunday, our athletes handled the change and showed up ready to put a stamp on the end of our regular season," said Director of Rowing/Head Coach Mike Lane.

The day started with a unique schedule of events to set-up the finals in the afternoon. All of the Atlantic 10 schools competed in a heat together, and then the MAAC teams competed against the boats from the Colonial Athletic Association and Big 12 Conference, with JU's 1st Varsity 8+ winning its heat. In a similar set-up, the 2nd Varsity 8+ came in second in its initial race.

In the Varsity 4 races, the 1st Varsity 4+ also won its initial race, with the 2nd Varsity 4+ coming in second and the 3rd Varsity 4+ finishing third.

The top two boats from each morning race then faced off in the finals in the afternoon, with JU's 1st Varsity 8+ again winning its race, this time over the likes of Villanova, Dayton and St. Joseph's. The 2nd Varsity 8+ also turned in the top time in the second final, besting those three schools again.

JU's 1st Varsity 4+ also won its final, beating Villanova, Duquesne and St. Joseph's.

"I was thrilled with our performance today," said Lane. "I could not be prouder of what our athletes did on the water today.

Really great job! This is huge as we now have 21 days till our conference championship to build on the speed we have and hopefully get even faster."
