Women’s Lacrosse Claims Seventh ASUN Regular Season Title With Win Over Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team was back in action on the road Friday afternoon as they opened their final road trip of the season opposite ASUN foe Kennesaw State. The Dolphins (8-1, 3-0) scored early and often against the Owls (5-9, 1-2), and pushed the pace all game long, winning by a score of 23-4 to take home their third-straight ASUN Conference regular season title and seventh overall, posting their seventh perfect season in conference play and moving to 48-1 all-time in the ASUN since becoming a member in 2013.

"Today was a total team effort, 10 different scorers, our defense held them to zero goals in the second half and we dominated draw play this afternoon," said head coach Mindy McCord. "Getting everyone on the field was a great way to win the regular season title. I am so proud of the team's togetherness and love for the game."

Kennesaw State got on the board first at Fifth Third Bank Stadium but their lead would be short-lived as Molly Brock even the score at one on a pass from Maddie Sturgell. Just over a minute later, JU took the lead for good as Sarah Elms converted a free position try at 26:35 to make it 2-1.

Mackenzie Boyle scored her first of the day in a man-up situation from Jenny Kinsey before Kinsey found the net less than a minute later to make it a three-goal game at 4-1.

The Owls made it 4-2 with a goal at 20:37 before the pace of the game slowed considerably for about the next 10 minutes as both sides had their fair share of shots but were unable to find the back of the cage. Brock broke the scoreless drought with her second goal of the game 11:40 before KSU responded in short order to stay within reach at 5-3.

A goal by Mackenzie Boyle at 9:56 sparked a 6-0 Jacksonville run that made it 11-3 shortly before the half. Grace Hobson scored for the seventh-straight game with 7:22 before the half as Elms, Brock, Julia Kolderman and Madeline Cloyd all found the net during the run.

Kennesaw scored what would end up being their final goal of the afternoon in the final minute of the half to make it 11-4 heading into the intermission. JU outshout the Owls 25-14 in the first 30 minutes of action.

Brock opened the first half with a pair of quick goals in the within the first two minutes of play to put the Dolphins up 13-4 before Elms scored on a pass from Lauren Phillips to make it 14-4 and start a running clock for the remainder of the game.

Alyssa Arnold joined the fun with her first goal of the game at 25:01 from Megan Prescott before Prescott scored just moments later to make it a 16-4 game. Jacksonville kept up the pressure offensively as the half progressed, as they pushed their lead to 16 at 20-4 with 12 minutes to go on goals from Phillips, Kinsey and Elms.

Phillips scored her second goal of the game with just under 10 minutes remaining on a pass from Zoe Macrae. Kolderman wrapped up the scoring for the afternoon, finishing the day with two goals in the final five minutes as she recorded the first hat trick of her Dolphin career.

Brock and Elms led the way with five goals each, with the former adding six draw controls. Kinsey finished the day with two goals and two assists while Phillips had two goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. 10 different players scored in the game for Jacksonville, the most in a game so far this season.

Addy Tysdal recorded six saves in goal in the first half while Dayna Martinetto and Sharn Muffett each made a save on the one shot they each faced in the second half.

JU outshot KSU 47-17 in the game and 22-3 in the second half. The Dolphins posted 18 draws in a game for the second time this season and also finished the afternoon with 19 ground balls. The Dolphins 23-goal outburst is their highest scoring total of the year and the first game with 23 goals since March 29, 2019 when JU defeated Wofford 23-3.

With the win, the Dolphins lock up the top seed going into next weekend's ASUN Conference Women's Lacrosse Championships, which will be held at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw. The Dolphins will match up with fourth-seeded Stetson at 1 PM on May 6. Up next, Jacksonville heads to Mercer to close out the regular season Sunday at 1 PM at Five Star Stadium in Macon.
