Women’s Rowing Travels to Sarasota for Sunshine State Invitational

SARASOTA, FLA – Jacksonville Women's Rowing will get back on the water for their fifth race weekend in a row when they travel to Sarasota for the Sunshine State Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

In their last event out on Friday, March 25, the Dolphins competed in three races that all finished in the same order of Miami in first place, JU in second, and Stetson in third. Jacksonville ran their quickest race in the 1st Varsity 8 with a time of 7:24.1 but were still 44 seconds slower than their fastest run in the 8+ this season, which they claimed vs Embry-Riddle on March 11 (6:40.1).

Looking forward to this weekend, the Dolphins will take to the waters of Cooper Creek Lake for the 2022 running of the Sunshine State Invite, where they will battle a grouping of schools that include MAAC opponent Stetson, and in-state opponents UCF and Miami. JU will also get the opportunity to compete against some new schools in Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, and Northeastern.

When asked about the upcoming weekend, Head Coach Mike Lane was ready for another solid opportunity for his team to improve their race pace at what will be the site of this year's NCAA Championships, while also receiving some much-deserved rest and recovery following the event.

"I am excited to get back down to Sarasota to do some racing! This is the site of the 2022 NCAA Championships in late May so we will use this as motivation to get back in a few months! It has been a long 5 weeks, and while racing every weekend gives us a ton of information and knowledge about how our kids race, it is also exhausting. I know our women are excited to race, but I also know we are ready to reset as we then have 3 weeks leading up to the next race," said Lane.

Coach Lane continued on to say how excited he was for his team to continue to fine tune their technique this weekend, while also seeing how their recent training has paid off.

"I still think we have a ton of speed to find. I am excited to see us get faster weekend to weekend, however I'm also excited to continue to do the small things right that will ultimately make us champions.  We practice those small things daily!  This Friday and Saturday is a change to put that practice to the test."

The regatta begins at 4 pm on Friday with JU competing in the opening race, the 2nd Varsity Four, against Stetson and the rest of the aforementioned teams. Saturday's race times and schedule will be determined based on the results from Friday.
