SARASOTA, FL - Jacksonville Women's Rowing rounded out the Sunshine State Invitational on Saturday morning with a solid day two performance that included edging out top programs Louisville, Kansas State, Northeastern, Miami, and Tulsa across the five races that they competed in.
Kicking off the day with the 1
st V8 Petite Final, the competition was fierce for the 'Phins, with all five schools finishing the race within 13 seconds of each other. In the race, JU managed to improve their day one heat time of 6:45.60 by just over two seconds (6:43.42) and would finish in fourth place of five teams.
Moving onto the second race of JU's day, the 2
nd V8 Petite Final, the Dolphins were involved in yet another tight race missing out on first place by just less than three seconds. However, they did manage to edge out Northeastern by .19 for third place tying their highest finish of the day.
The Dolphins would then slow down slightly in the 3
rd V8 Grand Final by posting a time of 7:17.04 and finishing in fifth place out of six teams, over 25 seconds behind UCF in fourth.
Rounding out Jacksonville's day were the 1
st V4 Petite Final and 2
nd V4 Grand Final races where JU posted times of 7:45.36 and 7:45.64 respectively. In the 2
nd V4 Grand Final JU would edge out Louisville, Kansas State, and MAAC opponent Stetson to claim fifth place out of eight teams.
Looking at the event as a whole, Jacksonville managed to improve on every single heat time that they posted in day one, with their fastest time of the weekend coming in the 1st V8 Petite Final on day two with their aforementioned time of 6:43.42.
When asked, Head Coach
Mike Lane was pleased with how his team competed on day two, and while the Dolphins did not place extremely well, Lane was still happy with their overall race pace.
"Finals were good! Overall, I was really proud of how our team fought today! Although the placings don't reflect it, this is the most competitive we have been at this regatta when looking at our percentage off the winning time, which is awesome! It means we are continuing to get faster and that's all I can ask."
"To be in a situation where you have to race the entire way down the course is something we can't replicate in practice. Our women got two fantastic races where they were racing one or more crews wire to wire with the chance for anyone to win. It was some of the most exciting races I have seen our women be a part of!" said Lane.
The Dolphins will now take a much-needed break following five straight race weekends before they return to action on Sunday, April 24, when they head to Virginia to compete in the George Mason Invitational.
