Women’s Rowing Preps for Two-Race Final Weekend Including MAAC Championship

Philadelphia, PA. / Pennsauken Township, NJ. – Jacksonville Women's Rowing heads back out on the road this weekend where they will finish up their spring season beginning with the two-day Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday, followed by the 2022 MAAC Championship presented by VisitNJ on Sunday.

DAD VAIL REGATTA

On Friday, the Dolphins begin their action-packed weekend when they race one boat, the 2nd Varsity 4+, in day one of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River just north of Philadelphia.

Day one of the Dad Vail includes time trial racing which begins at 7 am, followed by heat racing in the afternoon which is scheduled to finish up around 5 pm. Pending their result, the 'Phins will then look to day two on Saturday for semi-final heats at 7 am, followed by the final races at noon.

The Dolphin 2nd Varsity 4+ boat will be competing in the Women's Collegiate JV4+ race alongside some high-level opponents in UCONN, Wisconsin, Colorado, and MIT while also facing MAAC opponents Iona and Manhattan.

MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Following their competition in the Dad-Vail, the Dolphins will then hop over the river to New Jersey to compete in the coveted 2022 MAAC Championship on Sunday.

Unlike Friday and Saturday, the Phins will race four different boats in the championship with heat racing running from 10 am to 10:50 am, followed by final racing from 1:10 pm to 2:50 pm. The boats in competition will include two Varsity 8's and two Varsity 4's.

Following their second-place finish in last year's MAAC Championship and subsequent second place ranking in the 2022 pre-season coaches poll, the Dolphins are looking forward to the opportunity to retake the number one spot from Marist and return to the top of a conference that they ran from 2014 to 2018. In that time span the Dolphins won the MAAC Championship five times in a row, on each occasion edging out Marist in second place.

Every time but one that the Dolphins have competed in the MAAC Championship and have not won (2012, 2013, 2019, & 2021), Marist has been the Champion which has made for a solid now ten-year rivalry between the two schools.

Jacksonville and Marist are now set to renew that rivalry alongside Canisius, Drake, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, and Stetson who round out the ten-team field.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MIKE LANE ON THE WEEKEND

"Training camp was a huge success!  It was really an opportunity to get away from campus and just focus on rowing!  Now that we are back on campus our athletes are settling back into their normal routines, however all of us know that our championship races are just days away and that excitement is palpable."

"I am excited for our 2nd Varsity 4+!  They are the only one of our 4 crews who get to race both at the Dad Vail as well at MAAC.  We had planned for them to race the Dad Vail then a month ago the MAAC added a 2nd Varsity 4+ event so they get the best of both worlds!  They are a strong crew who really came together over the last week.  Really excited for them to gain all the racing experience this weekend that they can!"

"Racing along side our men's team is an added bonus!  It is pretty rare in today's scheduling that we racing at the same event.  I expect a lot of high energy JU support this weekend!  Go JUROWING!"
