Women’s Rowing Wins MAAC Championship for Sixth Time in School History

Pennsauken Township, NJ. – Jacksonville Women's Rowing claimed their sixth MAAC Championship in program history on Sunday, winning every final race that they competed in.

Beginning the day with the Second Varsity Four Grand Final, Jacksonville blew both Fairfield and Sacred Heart out of the water winning the race by just over 22 seconds, setting the stage for the rest of their blazing fast afternoon.

Then in the First Varsity Four Grand Final the 'Phins claimed their second win of the day, this time by just over a boat length over Fairfield who finished up five and a half seconds behind the Dolphin 1V4. Now firmly in the driver seat, the 'Phins claimed their third of four victories on the day in the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final posting a first-place time of 07:00.666.

Then in the final race, the First Varsity Eight Grand Final, the 'Phins could have secured the Conference Championship with just a second-place finish, but they instead won again, this time setting their fastest pace of the day with a time of 06:41.512.

The win marks Jacksonville's return to the top of the MAAC after finishing runner-up in the last two running's of the event, in 2019 and 2021. With the win they were able to edge out rivals Marist who finished the conference championship in second place with Fairfield in third.

Following the completion of the event, the MAAC Conference also announced their All-MAAC awards, and to no surprise the 'Phins cleaned up.

Head coach Mike Lane was named the 2022 MAAC Women's Rowing Coach of the Year, while five of his Dolphin rowers cracked the All-MAAC First Team including Hannah Gagnon, Ginger Hubbard, Gabby Huxtable, Amanda Sampo, and Caroline Wells. Making the All-MAAC Second Team was Junior Hannah Williams.

Winning the MAAC Championship now means the Dolphins have secured an automatic bid to the three-day NCAA Championships which are scheduled to take place from Friday, May 27, to Sunday, May 29, in Sarasota, Florida. The Dolphins now wait to learn their field of opponents which will be announced on May 17, at 5 pm.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MIKE LANE

"We've been through a ton of adversity the past three years, and I think that the results today speak for themselves and show that they wanted this more than anything in the world. Winning every event hasn't happened since I believe 2017, and I think that really shows that these kids were gonna take nothing less than coming in first... It was awesome, I think that (winning the first race by 22 seconds) just shows the culture of the entire team and the success that we've had... It's awesome and we're pretty happy right now!"
