Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville men's soccer celebrate victory after defeating Bellarmine in a thrilling 3-2 match in Southern Oak Stadium. The Dolphins record now stands 5-7-3 overall and 2-1-3 in ASUN conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was yet another premier home performance for the Jacksonville Dolphins as Carson Wood found the back of the net twice, securing his second brace of the season. Alongside Wood, a second-half game-winning goal was netted by JU forward David Robinson, ensuring a victory for the Dolphins on their senior night matchup.
To open the scoring, Trey Demps set up the lightning-fast Carson Wood in the 28th minute. Wood received the pass 40 yards out and, with a defender on his hip, sprinted down the sideline, delivering an accurate right-footed cross that deflected off a Knight defender and found the back of the net. With 34 minutes remaining in the second half, keeper Mike Zolnierczyk made a heroic save on a dangerous header by Knight's midfielder Brendan Schoemehl. Following the save, Zolnierczyk launched a 70-yard bomb that led to a sprinting Wood. In a one-on-one matchup, Wood outpaced the Knight defender, facing only Bellarmine keeper Matthew Brozovich. Wood found the back of the net, capping off an exciting play ignited by Zolnierczyk. In the 70th minute, the JU offense orchestrated a significant build-up. Mason Duval crossed the ball through the Knights' 18-yard box to Demps. Demps then located Robinson in the middle. After an initial attempt that missed the target, Robinson followed up by placing a goal into the bottom right corner to secure the victory.
The match was a nail-biter, marked by numerous changes in momentum. However, the Dolphins kept most possessions. Bellarmine had a chance to equalize with just a minute left in the game as a contentious foul awarded a free kick to the Knights. Bellarmine put forth their best effort, but keeper Zolnierczyk's heroics prevailed, securing the save for the Dolphins to maintain their lead. Bellarmine Knights saw goals from Brendan Schoemehl and Juan Ballas in an attempt to level the Dolphins' flurry of goals. Knights' effort proved not enough to take on the Dolphins fighting for the potential to clinch their 2023 season.
