JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
Oct. 30, 2025 — Jacksonville University Athletics is excited to announce the addition of two new club sports beginning in Spring 2026: Women's Club Flag Football and Club Weightlifting. These additions reflect the university's commitment to expanding competitive opportunities and fostering student engagement through diverse athletic programming.
The new programs will provide Jacksonville University students with additional ways to compete, develop athletic skills, and build community through sport. Both will operate within the university's club sports structure, giving students the opportunity to represent JU in regional and national competition while balancing academic commitments.
Women's Club Flag Football
Women's flag football continues to grow rapidly across the country, with increasing participation at the collegiate level and recognition as one of the fastest-growing sports in America. Jacksonville University's Women's Club Flag Football team will compete against other universities in the region, offering students an opportunity to develop their skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
"We're thrilled to offer women's flag football as a club sport," said Senior Vice President and Athletics Director,
Alex Ricker-Gilbert. "This program reflects the growing interest we've seen from our students and aligns with national trends in women's athletics. It's an exciting opportunity for our campus community."
The team will practice and compete throughout the spring semester, with details on tryouts and registration to be announced before the end of the calendar year.
Club Weightlifting
The new Club Weightlifting program will provide students passionate about strength sports with a structured environment to train, compete, and excel. Open to all skill levels, the program will focus on proper technique, progressive training, and competitive development.
Participants will have opportunities to compete in regional meets and potentially qualify for national competitions. In addition to physical strength and athletic performance, the program will also focus on the discipline, dedication, and mental fortitude that weightlifting develops.
Expanding Opportunities
These additions build upon Jacksonville University's strong athletics and recreation offerings, which include a wide range of varsity, club, and intramural sports. The expansion demonstrates JU's dedication to providing comprehensive programs that meet the diverse interests of its students.
Students interested in either program are encouraged to follow Jacksonville University Athletics for updates on registration, tryouts, and program details throughout the fall semester. Information sessions for both programs will be scheduled ahead of the Spring 2026 launch.
