LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Jacksonville women's lacrosse team fell in the Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinal 11-10 to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Thursday afternoon.
The Dolphins were led by sophomore attacker
Maeve Brennan, who finished with six points, scoring two goals and providing four assists.
JU got off to a hot start in the first. Brennan opened the scoring, attacking downhill and scoring on the doorstep. Freshman attacker
Shae Hagans kept the foot on the gas, fighting through a crowd of Chanticleers for another Dolphin goal.
The Jacksonville offense zipped the ball around the arc, finding Brennan and senior attacker
Madison Plitt for open goals near the crease. Coastal Carolina had answers early, leaving the score tied at four after the first.
The Chanticleers struck first in the second quarter, taking their first lead of the day. Coastal scored again minutes later to take a 6-4 lead. Plitt broke Jacksonville's scoreless drought, potting a goal on a woman-up opportunity.Â
Sophomore attacker
Allyx Berry split past her defender and buried a high bounce shot over the goalie's shoulder to tie the game at six. Brennan continued her electric first half, faking out the goalie before dishing it back to Plitt for a wide-open goal to take the lead into the halftime break.
Coastal Carolina scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 9-7 lead with just over five minutes left in the third. Junior attacker
Brigid Manning broke the goalless drought for the Dolphins, burying a free-position shot to cut into the deficit.
The Chanticleers scored one more before the end of the quarter, and Jacksonville trailed by two with one quarter to play. Coastal scored one more to take a three-goal lead.
The Dolphins kept fighting to the end, with Berry scoring a pair of goals late in the fourth to cut the lead down to one in the final 80 seconds. Jacksonville couldn't get another possession, though, and the Chanticleers left with the win.
Game Notes
- Led by junior midfielder Abby Moran's 17 draw controls, the Dolphins won the draw battle 22-3.
- Plitt and Berry each finished with three goals.
- Senior defender Kaila Stasulli finished with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
