JACKSONVILLE, FL — Following a dominant performance on opening weekend at John Sessions Stadium, Jacksonville junior Derek Bermudez was named the ASUN Player of the Week.
Bermudez powered the Dolphins to a four-game sweep of Rhode Island, putting together one of the most productive opening-weekend performances not only in the ASUN, but in the entire country. He quickly established himself as one of the nation's most dangerous early-season bats, as his nine hits and 13 RBIs from the weekend are both tied for second nationally, per D1Baseball.
He opened the season hitting .600, ranking third in the ASUN, and also sits third in the league in both on-base percentage (.647) and slugging percentage (1.067). Bermudez's 1.714 OPS ranks fourth in the conference through four games, and his two home runs are tied for the ASUN lead alongside teammate Cade Walter.
His signature performance came Sunday in the series finale, when Bermudez launched a grand slam as part of a two-homer, seven RBI outing in Jacksonville's 15-1 victory.
A transfer from Florida International University, Bermudez has made an immediate impact in his first season with the Dolphins. The Pembroke Pines native and West Broward High School product has quickly emerged as one of the league's premier early-season performers.
Bermudez is the first Dolphin to receive ASUN weekly honors this season.
Jacksonville enters the week unbeaten at 4-0 and returns to action Tuesday night against No. 16 Florida State at John Sessions Stadium.
