Hagans Career Night Powers Jacksonville Past Brown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Jacksonville Dolphins earned their biggest win of the season to date, outlasting the Brown Bears 16-10 Friday evening at Rock Stadium. The Dolphins (2-0) outscored the Bears 11-3 in the second half, surging past the preseason No. 22 team in the country.

Jacksonville was led by sophomore sensation Shae Hagans who set a new career high with five goals. She was one of three Dolphins players with at least three goals, as senior Ainsley Scruggs potted four and junior Julia Nicholson posted the second hat trick of her career.

The game was a battle from the opening whistle. Brown scored the first two of the game, but Hagans had the answer on the other end. She scored her second not long after, finishing off an Allyx Berry assist on the woman-up.

Scruggs took it herself from the wing to give Jacksonville their first lead of the game. As soon as the Dolphins went up for the first time, the Bears scored three in a row to take a two goal lead late into the quarter. Berry would get one of her own to close the quarter and keep the 'Phins one back.

The high-flying scoring of the first quarter stopped in the second as the defenses took control of the game. Brown scored twice early, taking its largest lead of the game, 7-4. Scruggs potted a clutch goal as the quarter ticked down, giving Jacksonville the momentum into the break.

After a quick Bears goal seemingly slowed the momentum in the third quarter, it would be all Dolphins the rest of the way.

In a five-minute stretch, Jacksonville would score seven-straight goals to flip the game on its head. It started with junior Maeve Brennan, who scored the first of her two goals. Hagans completed her early hat-trick, then Brennan turned assister for the first of Nicholson's goals.

Brennan found Hagans for another goal, then Nicholson buried a shot off a pass from Scruggs. Scruggs potted two more of her own to close off a 7-1 third quarter that saw the Dolphins go from trailing to up four with a quarter to play.

Not to be outdone, Nicholson and Hagans both scored to open the fourth. In all, the Dolphins scored nine unanswered goals to lead by as many as six goals. Brown answered with two more goals, but it was too little too late.

As the Bears emptied into the 10-man ride, Berry scored on the empty net and Brennan glided through traffic for a pair of late goals to cap off a magical night in Jacksonville.
