Offense Runs Wild As JU Rolls Over Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Jacksonville Dolphins were firing away all afternoon on a picturesque Saturday afternoon. And they almost never missed when they did. Jacksonville's offense dominated en route to a 19-7 win over the reigning ASUN champion Liberty Flames.

Jacksonville (7-3, 3-1 ASUN) had 32 shots, with 30 of them on goal. The Dolphins shot nearly 60% from the field while five different players had at least four points on the day.

In the first quarter, it didn't look like the type of day that ends in nearly 20 JU goals. Neither team found the score sheet until the near halfway point in the first. Jacksonville broke away in transition as senior defender Maggie Cutty took it all the way before dishing it off to junior Maddie Herman for the goal.

Junior Maeve Brennan got one more in the first for Jacksonville before the end of the first quarter, setting the stage for an explosive final three periods of play.

The Dolphins put six on the board in the second quarter. Junior Jessica Giller got it started with a free-position goal, then sophomore Shae Hagans fired a long-range effort past the goalie for another.

Brennan added another to her tally, forcing a Flames turnover and taking it herself into the wide-open attacking zone and putting it past the goaltender. Facing a woman-down situation, Jacksonville forced a stop, broke through the Liberty ride and senior Ainsley Scruggs powered home the shorthanded tally.

Giller and junior midfielder Julia Nicholson would each add late goals, and even as Liberty added a few notches to its own tally, the Dolphins led by five at halftime.

Already with an assist to her name, Cuddy had another breakaway and punished the Flames for an empty goal with a casual lob from the restraining line. Minutes later, sophomore midfielder Isabella Porazzo earned a free-position shot and converted for her first career goal.

Nicholson added another free-position goal for JU, then Cuddy once again broke the game open with a quick clear on a shorthanded situation. With the Dolphins in possession, even down a player, Giller found acres of space to roll into the high crease for another tally.

Hagans and Nicholson each found open space inside the eight-meter arc for catch-and-shoot goals to close the third with JU leading by eight.

The Dolphins didn't let up an inch, pouring it on to the tune of five more goals in the fourth quarter.

Giller got another early in the quarter, then Scruggs buried one immediately off of the ensuing draw control. Hagans completed her hat-trick, as would Brennan later on. Nicholson also got one on the board as JU cruised to the victory.

Game Notes
  • Nicholson's five points (4G, 1A) is a new career high.
  • Cuddy has recorded a point in four different games this season. This was her first career multi-point game. She also recorded her 100th career ground ball in the win.
  • Giller has recorded five points in three-straight games, a career-best for a three-game stretch.
  • With six points today (3G, 3A), Brennan is now at 96 points for her career.
  • Defender Courtney Quirk has had at least two ground balls and two caused turnovers in five-straight games. She set a new career-high with five caused turnovers against the Flames.
Head Coach Tara Singleton
"We had 12 assisted goals, 26 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers, we couldn't ask for much better than that. What a great team win."
