Rowing Career and College years

Jeremy grew up in Philadelphia, PA; he attended North Catholic High where he began rowing as Junior. He was recruited by Jacksonville University and matriculated in 1992. As a freshman he trained under Frosh/Novice Coach Francisco Viacava. His frosh crew found success in the spring sprints winning at the President Cup in Tampa and placing in the varsity 4+ at the 1993 Dad Vail Regatta. As a sophomore Jeremy earned his Varsity Letter and competed in the Head of Charles, Head of the Chattahoochee, the First Coast Head Race, and medaled at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, and placed at the 1994 Dad Vail. As a junior Jeremy earned the stroke seat in the University’s Open 8+. The 8 was qualified for and competed at the English Richmond Regatta and the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England. That same year he was voted as the best all-around rower by his peers and earned the coveted I.W. Bull Oarsman Award. In his last year of eligibility Jeremy medaled at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, and placed at the 1996 Dad Vail. Jeremy’s love and passion for Dolphin Rowing continued as the Assistant Men’s Coach in 1997 and 1998. He has competed in several master’s level head races since.

Post College

Jeremy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and freelanced for more than 20 years. He is currently a medical/clinical photographer at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. He was a photography instructor in the University’s College of Fine Arts for 3 years.  Jeremy is married to the former Kelly Setchel (JU class of 1996) and has two daughters and resides in Jacksonville.

Who is he…

Jeremy is an artist. There is a beauty in that word, it can encapsulate so many things. Jeremy understands the human body and how it moves, this allowed him to be a rower for others to follow, on the water (usually in the stern pair) and off. Jeremy has an eye to see what others miss, he can point his camera lens and capture an image that translates, somehow, into telling a full story of life. This is seen in many of his photographs taken during his many travels across Europe. As an artist Jeremy will draw you into his life with his desire to see the beauty within yourself. As a rower he led with his laugh, he led with his desire to see the perfection of the human body, and he led you as a teammate because you wanted to see the perfection he saw in you. As a photographer Jeremy sees everything through a lens, the color or lack thereof, the balance of life that nature shows him where no one else sees. Jeremy’s ability to see the detail of life and the broader picture simultaneously is what has given him the ability to be a loving husband, father, crewmate and friend.

Crewmate For Life

Jeremy was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in early 2020. The personality trait that so many athletes have to fight and push through adversity has been a driving force in Jeremy’s treatment over the past year. The friendships forged during his years at Jacksonville University as a rower shows the value of this sport far exceeds the four years you row as teammates. JU rowers past and present have rallied to assist the Paterno family in this time of need with truly immeasurable support. The name #TEAMPATERNO  was selected to remind all who row in her that it takes a team to win in rowing and It also take a team to win fighting against cancer.
