Former Dolphin captain and standout quarterback Rylan Wells returns to the River City for the 2018 football season, serving as an offensive graduate assistant.
A native of Tega Cay, South Carolina, Wells was a five-year member of the Jacksonville football team from 2013-17, starting 34 games as the quarterback position. He finished his Dolphin career ranked among the top-5 all-time in rushing touchdowns, passing completions, passing attempts, completion percentage and total yards.
A 2017 team captain, Wells started all 11 games at quarterback, passing for 1480 and 11 touchdowns, and rushing for 472 yards and eight more scores. A three-time Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week honoree, he was recognized as an Honorable Mention for the STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8, following a performance against Davidson that included five combined touchdowns and a JU victory.
His breakout campaign came in 2016, when, as a redshirt-junior, he became the first JU player to lead the squad in both rushing and passing yards in the same season, accumulating 1,744 over the air and 614 yards on the ground in 10 contests. Scoring 11 touchdowns each way, he fell one score shy of of the program single-game record against Marist, rushing for four in one outing.
Wells earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Jacksonville, and is currently working towards a master's in sport management.
