McRae Powers Jacksonville Past Stetson

Box Score

DeLand, Fla. - A 10-day break and a 45-minute rain delay did little to slow down Jacksonville on Saturday as the Dolphins rolled to a 9-1 win at Stetson behind a strong outing from Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis.).

McRae earned his second straight and fourth win of the season with a complete game two-hitter. The Dolphins ace added seven strikeouts and had a no-hitter through 6 complete innings before allowing a leadoff home run to the Hatters Patrick Mazeika.

"Once you get a couple of runs behind you and you are pitching with the lead its really easy to attack the hitters and get ahead with the fastball and let them hit it," said McRae on his second complete game of the season. "The long break didn't affect me at all and the delays with the rain the last two days is just one of those things that happens. You can't control it so there is no need to stress about it."

"Braddock Rowe did a terrific job calling the game for Alex behind the plate," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "That is the kind of leadership you expect out of a senior and he show that tonight."

Jacksonville (15-25; 8-10 A-Sun) used a balanced attack to back McRae as seven of the nine starters had at least one hit in the game.

Senior Scott Schaub (Ocala, Fla.) got things started in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single to right scoring Angelo Amendolare (Edgewater, Fla.) who led off the inning with an infield single.

Sophomore Nate Ricci (Madison, Wis.) extended the lead to 3-0 in the third with a two-out, two run single to center after Schaub was intentionally walked to load the bases.

The Dolphins would then break the game open in the sixth following a leadoff double by Connor Marabell (Jacksonville, Fla.) for one of his two hits. Marabell scored the first of JU's three runs in the frame on a bases loaded error, followed by a walk to Michael Babb (Jacksonville, Fla.) and a RBI ground out by Alex Seifert (Lakeland, Fla.). Seifert added two hits and a run scored in the victory as well.

Stetson (18-29; 7-12 A-Sun) had no answer for Jacksonville as the game wore on. Cameron Gibson (Conyers, Ga.) extended the lead to 8-1 win a two-run single in the eighth. Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla.) then capped off a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a RBI single in the ninth. Dillard, who had a go-ahead three-run home run in the Dolphins 3-1 victory at #6 Florida last time out, now has seven RBI in the last four games.

"We are having a lot of fun as a team. The dugout is lively and a fun place to be," added McRae as the Dolphins have now won three of the last four games. "Now that school is out everyone is more relaxed and we are just here playing baseball."

"We've had some energy in the dugout in spurts for a couple innings at a time this season, but tonight we kept it up the whole game.  It helps the guys at the plate as well as the guys out in the field. It showed tonight and provided us with some great defense behind me with Schaub making some nice plays down at third and Braddock calling a great game behind the plate."

The series continues on Sunday with a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
