Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Claiming its first road victory of 2015, the Jacksonville University baseball team overpowered Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday evening, 15-6 behind back-to-back five run innings. The Dolphins improve to 7-9 overall, 1-4 on the road, while the Wildcats fall to 3-14 as JU heads back to Jacksonville for a four-game home stand.
The Dolphins trailed 6-1 heading into the fifth inning, but would answer and unleash five run innings in the same frame as well as the sixth. Junior JJ Gould would lead the charge with a 4-for-4 four RBI showing.
"We weren't trying to put up a five-run inning," said Gould. "We were just trying to chip away. That was the approach. One hit at a time, cut into the lead than by the middle to the end of the game we will find ourselves in good position, but it worked out really well in our favor and we were able to put up two big innings."
Starting the scoring, Gould would send a deep-drive over the center fielders head for a 2-RBI triple. "I knew if he didn't catch it, I needed to be on third base. I was digging for it the entire way."
Angelo Amendolare (0-for-4) would drive in Gould in the inning to add to his two-RBI afternoon. After back-to-back walks from Austin Hays (1-for-4) and Connor Marabell (1-for-4), Sam Armstrong (1-for-4) would come to the dish with two outs, tying the game at six apiece—a 2-RBI single into right.
"It was a full-team effort today," said Gould. "Really good to get the bats woken up and take that momentum back home against a really good Samford team."
JU wasn't done as they scored five more runs in the sixth inning. For the second-consecutive inning Parker Perez (3-for-4) would lead-off the inning more of the same results, a single, but this time charging down the line to beat the throw for an infield hit. Senior Cameron Gibson (1-for-5) would advance Perez to third, blooping a single into right field. Marabell would return to the dish and record his 21st RBI of the season.
In the same frame, Armstrong was back at the plate and recorded his third RBI of the evening working a 3-2 count to a walk. Senior Drew Luther (2-for-5) added the RBI after a walk and it was back to Perez—who would walk in a run for his fifth RBI of the season.
"The thing that I wanted to stress today was get back to having good approaches at the plate," said head coach Tim Montez. "We shook up the lineup today hoping it would give us a spark and putting JJ in the two hole did that and that's what he can do."
Gregory Shannahan captures his second win as a Dolphin, pitching three innings of shutout ball. For the game, the freshman set down 11-of-12 batters faced behind four strikeouts. Spencer Stockton started the game, surrendering one run on three hits, fanning one.
"Stockton did a great job getting us out of the gate," said Montez. "Shannahan came in and picked us up, giving us a chance to get back and win this game.
Wearing the Dolphin-gray uniforms, Jacksonville would gather four more runs in the last three innings completing the routing 15-6. Luther would double to left field, his first of the year, scoring the 15th run.
