Dolphins Leap Over Eagles for Game One Victory

Box Score

Live Scoring of Game 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Amidst a pitchers duel, the Jacksonville University baseball team strung together back-to-back two out singles to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth and held on for a 4-2 victory at Swanson Stadium on Friday evening. The Dolphins (16-17; 3-1) claim game one in the series against the Eagles (17-17-1; 4-3) and will look to capture the series win tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Paced by the freshmen on the bump, Michael Baumann was stellar once again, striking out six batters through six innings, while Spencer Stockton would provide three innings of one hit baseball, shutting down 9-of-11 Eagles batters faced to seal the victory.

"It all started with Big Mike on the mound this evening," said head coach Tim Montez. "He showed a lot of maturity throughout the week of preparation and in tonight's effort. "Stockton did a good job coming in and throwing strikes. We had good two-out hitting tonight and guys picked each other up. We had really good defense and at the end of the day it's all about pitching and defense and be able to execute. We can enjoy it for 12 hours but we got to get ready to get back on the saddle to face a very good FGCU team tomorrow."

Three batters had multi-hit games for the Dolphins with Angelo Amendolare (3-for-5), Connor Marabell (2-for-5) and Parker Perez (2-for-5) with an RBI from all three, leading the way.

In the eighth with two outs, a pinch-hit single by Nathan Koslowski (1-1) and an RBI-single by Cameron Gibson (1-for-2) would manufacture the go-ahead run, taking a 3-2 advantage into the ninth.

In his second inning of work, Spencer Stockton would walk the leadoff batter, but battle to rectify with his battery mate Drew Luther (1-for-5) and force a fly out to Jake Noll (3-for-4). The next batter faced would be the DH Brady Anderson who would lay down a sacrifice bunt.

Luther snuffed out the play and pounced on the slow roller in front of the plate gunning down the lead runner at second base for the second out of the inning. Stockton would induce the lineout to the next batter faced and the Eagles would be shunned again by the freshman from Wellington High School.

The Dolphins would add an insurance run in the ninth after Perez singled and two outs later, Marabell would come to the plate and drive the 1-1 pitch over the center fielders head for the RBI-double notching his team-high 13th double and 33rd RBI of the year.

Stockton would set down FGCU one-two-three in the ninth for his third win of the season in his conference-leading 21st appearance.

Jacksonville would claim its first lead of the game in the third inning with a leadoff single to right-center field by Sam Armstrong (1-for-3). JJ Gould (0-for-3) would lay down the sacrifice bunt, advancing Armstrong and Perez would gather the RBI-single through the right side. Luther would double extending the inning and Amendolare would drive the 1-2 pitch to right field for the RBI-single, scoring Luther to claim the early lead.

The Eagles would gather a run in the sixth off Baumann with a leadoff double by Noll and sacrifice fly by Zach Spivey, but that would be the end of the scoring for the reigning A-Sun regular season title holders and the Dolphins would claim game one of the three game set, resuming Saturday at 1 p.m.

Jeff Tanner (3-2) is slated to go in game two on Saturday.
