Four Home Runs Plague The Dolphins in Rubber Match Loss

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An aerial display of six home runs occurred at Harmon Stadium, as the Jacksonville University baseball team dropped the rubber match on Sunday with cross-town rival North Florida, 17-7. The Dolphins (18-21; 4-5 A-Sun) are 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun series slate while the Ospreys (30-13; 8-4) win their third conference series.

After winning the series opener, the teams combined for 35 hits on Sunday as the Dolphins fell behind a combined 27-runs scored with two outs in the two losses. JJ Gould (1-for4) and Garrett Ruckel (4-for-4) hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run fifth, but it was not enough as the Ospreys had four home runs of their own including a grand slam in the five-run second inning.

Jacksonville used four pitchers in the game, but couldn't quiet the bats of the Ospreys. UNF's Keith Skinner was responsible for the grand slam in the second that led to an early 7-1 deficit for the Dolphins. Back-to-back four run innings in the fifth and six was highlighted by a two-run homer by Ryan Roberson and a three-run shot by Skinner.

Clawing back was the away team in camo uniforms, driving in a four-run seventh behind a lead-off single by Drew Luther (2-for-4), his fifth hit of the series. Angelo Amendolare (2-for-4) with a 14-game hitting streak would walk, and to the plate was Connor Marabell (3-for-5), who would drive the 21 pitch into right center for an RBI single, his third of the series.

Cameron Gibson (2-for-5) tallied his fifth consecutive multi-hit game with a two-RBI single. Prior, Austin Hays (1-for-4) would walk and Gould would drive in his second RBI of the game, but the Ospreys would continue in the bottom half, driving in two for 33 runs in two games.

Four Dolphins pitchers were used as Justin Russell (2-6) would be tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs and Nathan Disch went a career-high four innings, surrendering eight. Shane Wise and Greg Shannahan combined for 2.1 innings, with Wise allowing two runs.

Amendolare stole his conference leading 18th bag of the season, while Marabell drove in three runs and had five hits for the series. Ruckel gathered four hits in the game for the second time this season.

The Dolphins return to John Sessions Stadium on Friday night with another A-Sun matchup with Stetson beginning at 6:30 p.m. JU hosts Arlington Day at the ballpark on Saturday with free admission to the game which begins at 4 p.m. No midweek contest this upcoming week due to the student-athletes finals tests.
