HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. – The Jacksonville University baseball team was defeated by Northern Kentucky, 7-4 on Saturday afternoon after the Norse homered three times. The Dolphins (20-25; 6-8 A-Sun) head to a Sunday rubber match for the fourth time in a conference series as the Norse (17-26; 5-9) are coming off a sweep of USC Upstate last time out. First pitch is slated for noon on Sunday.
The Dolphins struck first with three runs in the third, but were held scoreless until a run in the eighth would subdue the offense. Angelo Amendolare (2-for-4) notched his 22nd game with multi-hits in a double, single afternoon, while Austin Hays (1-for-4) also posted an extra-base hit double coming in a rally effort in the eighth.
Down two runs in the frame, a Hays leadoff double would mark his eighth this season while Dylan Dillard (1-for-2) singled between shortstop and third base to pull within one, but a two run home half would provide the dagger for Jacksonville.
After powering 11 runs on 13 hits in the opening game, the bats were tamed for eight hits in the second as Cameron Gibson (1-for-4), Sam Armstrong (1-for-3), Drew Luther (1-for-4) and Parker Perez (1-for-3) tallied the other hits with singles.
Coming off a 6.2 inning performance last time out in a conference series start, Spencer Stockton followed up with a six inning performance in which he allowed five earned runs. Justin Russell releived the freshman in the seventh and pitch 1.1 innings, allowing two earned and struck out two, while Gregory Shannahan finished for the Fins with two-thirds of a scoreless eighth, striking out one in four batters faced.
The bats continued where they left off last night in the first inning as Amendolare drove his 14th double of the season with two on-board in the first inning, knocking in Perez who led off with a single. Luther would score on an errant throw by the Norse and to the plate was Connor Marabell (0-for-4) who pulled the pitch down to first base for his 43rd RBI of the season.
That would do it offensively as the Dolphins were held scoreless from the second through the seventh innings. Cole Bauml, Logan Spurlin and Trey Ganns recorded the homeruns for the home team.
Nathan Disch (2-2) is slated to start in Game 3 as the A-Sun conference series continues tomorrow with Jacksonville still able to clinch their second series win with a noon first pitch.
