FORT MYERS, Fla. – It took a league-record 16 innings for the conclusion of the the Atlantic Sun conference championship opener for the Jacksonville University baseball team, as the 7-6 lead into the bottom half shifted to an 8-7 loss after a walk off home run by Stetson. The Dolphins head into Thursday's game with North Florida at 3:30 p.m. needing a win to continue in the tournament.
Nathan Disch's (3-3) performance was stellar in a career-high seven innings pitched, where he struck out six Hatters. The sophomore from Appleton, Wisc. held the Hatters to just two hits in six and a third shutout innings before a single by Kevin Fagan for the tying run and a Corey Reid two-run walk off home run stifled JU.
First-Team All-Conference nod Angelo Amendolare (3-for-7) would score the go-ahead run in the top half of the inning after a leadoff double. Cameron Gibson (3-for-6) drove in his fellow senior as JU would take a 7-6 advantage into the bottom of the 16th.
The Dolphins entered a 2.5 hour weather delay with a 1-0 advantage as Parker Perez's RBI fielder's choice brought home Sam Armstrong (1-for-6). A-Sun Pitcher of the Year, Michael Baumann dominated prior to the delay by holding the Hatters without a hit in four innings of work with six strikeouts.
Following the break in action, Jacksonville plated four runs in the top of the fifth which included a two-RBI double from Connor Marabell (2-for-7) and singles by Gibson and JJ Gould (2-for-6). Stetson answered with three runs of its own in the sixth inning.
Jacksonville-native Marabell continued his hot-hitting notching a pair of doubles and RBIs. The 21 doubles are most by a Dolphin in a season since Adam Brett-Walker's 23 in 2011, while his 54 RBI on the year are one behind Daniel Murphy for sixth in the last 15 years. A tribute to the senior Drew Luther's (2-for-7) leadership and toughness, he was the catcher for all 16 innings and reached base three times.
Both teams tallied a run in the eighth as Gould delivered a double for his second RBI of the contest, while Mazieka's sacrifice fly to centerfield drove in Vizcaino, to bring the score to 6-4.
Nathan Koslowski (4-for-6) notched his first-career four hit game in the effort. Entering in the fifth, Justin Russell provided three and a third inning, striking out one and maintained the lead into the ninth, pitching out of the winning run on second to send the game into extra innings.
Jacksonville will need to avoid elimination in the 3:30 p.m. contest against top-seeded North Florida. All games during the 2015 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship can be seen on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
