No. 1 Florida Downs Jacksonville, 7-2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Austin Hays went 2-3 and Mike Schappell fired two scoreless innings of relief in Jacksonville's 7-2 loss to Florida Tuesday at McKethan Stadium.

In a matchup of two staff days, Florida (28-3) got the first lead with a pair of runs in the second inning off Dolphin starter Kyle Arjona (2-1). The Gators used back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly to take the lead. Arjona gave up just the two runs on three hits and a walk in his first loss.

Jacksonville (17-11) surrendered another two-spot in the fourth on two RBI hits, three in total, off reliever Chris Gau.

Schappell then entered and kept the Gators off the board for the next two frames, including a wild 5-2-5-4-5 fielder's choice in the fifth that nailed out the leading runner of the inning,

That set the way for Jacksonville to push across its first run of the game in the seventh. Seth DeWitt reached on an error and Sam Armstrong got on with a single. Reliever Jackson Kowar's wild pitch allowed the two Dolphins to move into scoring position, and Franco Guardascione grounded out to allow DeWitt's score.

After Florida answered with an unearned Jeff Tanner run in the bottom of the inning, Jacksonville began the eighth with a leadoff double by Hays. He took third on a JJ Gould groundout, and scored on an RBI single by DeWitt.

The Gators capped the scoring with a two-run home run by Nelson Maldonado.

Scott Moss (1-0) took the win with three hitless innings and four strikeouts without a walk in his first career victory. The win extended Florida's home winning streak to 28 games.

Jacksonville begins Atlantic Sun conference play this weekend with a three-game series at home against North Florida. The series starts with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch Friday.

"We're going to stay confident and keep playing our game without trying to press. We are a confident team and our younger guys like to follow the older ones," said Hays. "I'm going to stay steady and keep having fun playing the game."
