Mid-Week Wrap-Up

After suffering a one-day postponement due to inclement weather, the Dolphins traveled to Gainesville to face defending National Champion #2/1 Florida Wednesday evening. The team did all of its scoring in the seventh frame in the 10-3 loss, as Chris Lehane, Angel Camacho and Sam Armstrong each plated runs. Lehane steadied the team offensively in the affair, going 3-4 and crossing home plate once.

On-Deck Circle

  • Taking advantage of chances to thrive in the lineup last weekend, OF Cory Garrastazu introduced himself to the Jacksonville faithful. The Marshall transfer went .556 in nine at-bats when starting the latter two contests, registering his first three-hit game as a Dolphin in Sunday's win.
  • Sophomore Ruben Someillan continues to produce at the top of the lineup for JU, where he has hit in all but one game this season. The centerfielder owns a team-high 15 game on-base streak, and batted .387 over the last 10 contests.
  • Camacho was an RBI machine last weekend, sending six runners home on seven hits. The first-baseman cranked out four extra-base knocks, including his first career triple in Friday's contest.
  • Rookie reliever Chris Mauloni has emerged as the number to call out of the pen in save situations this season. The River City product now has eight on the year, adding another to solidify a Dolphin win last Friday. Mauloni sits tied for second in the country in the mark, leading all freshmen.
  • Armstrong has found his mojo at the plate lately. The active career leader in runs, hits, at-bats, home runs, and RBI has hit safely in the last five contests, garnering eight hits and three RBI during that time.
  • JU had great success with the double play ball over the weekend, turning six against Fairfield. The team's defensive diligence propelled them from 192 to 102 in the country in the statistic.
  • Following the weekend sweep over Fairfield, JU has taken four of the first five series' for the first time since 2011. The team has emerged victorious in its first four home series' for the first time since 1989, when they finished 42-22 overall, advancing to an NCAA Regional.

Scouting The Gamecocks

  • Renewing an ASUN conference rivalry that was played out from 1999-2003, the 12-6 Gamecocks look to pick up speed in the weekend series, taking a break from Ohio Valley Conference play.
  • Already 3-3 in its league, JSU dropped two of three contests at home to Austin Peay two weeks ago to open up OVC action. The squad rebounded by shutting out Eastern Illinois on the road twice last weekend to take the three-game affair. Due to ugly weather that struck Alabama this week, the team's scheduled mid-week contest against Kennesaw State was cancelled.
  • With a team ERA of 3.64, the Gamecocks enter the weekend among the nation's leaders in shutouts, owning five on the year, including three in their last four contests. JSU is steadied offensively by junior Nic Gaddis, who is batting .421 on the year, appearing in 17 of the team's first 18 games. The catcher ranks fifth in the country in doubles, with 11 two-baggers to his name thus far.
  • Besides similarities in naming and hometowns, the two teams match up well together on paper, in terms of season production thus far. Jacksonville just edges JSU out in RPI, ranking 81, while the Gamecocks place 86.
