Jacksonville, Fla. – Seana Mora pitched a complete-game-shutout as Jacksonville University defeated Florida A&M 3-0 at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex Wednesday.
Mora (6-8) struck out four in seven innings in the win.
The Dolphins (22-19) stayed even with the Rattlers (16-22) through four innings as the two teams combined for just three hits. But JU broke through in the fifth thanks to a bit of heads-up base-running by Serena Quinata.
Quinata walked to start the inning and took second base on an error by the first baseman. She moved 60 feet closer on a wild pitch before Makenzie Buss drove her in with an RBI-single to right-center field.
"I'm proud of the way the kids handled a little bit of a struggle at the plate tonight," Jacksonville head coach Erica Ayers said. "I think we are capable of putting more quality at-bats together than we did tonight, but they put some together late and found a way to score."
With a 1-0 lead in the fifth, Hannah Roberts, who was 2-for-3 on the night, belted a two-run homer.
Mora preserved the 3-0 lead, logging the game's final three outs in succession.
"Seana gave us a much-needed quality start and the defense played very well behind her, giving us a chance to score late and secure the win," Ayers said.
For Florida A&M, Veroni Burse (5-14) was charged with the loss.
Next up for JU is a three-game set with A-Sun foe USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It begins with a Saturday doubleheader, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 4 p.m.
