Dolphins Fall In USF Tournament Finale

TAMPA, Fla. – Late runs were the decisive factor as Jacksonville University volleyball fell to San Jose State, 3-0, in the USF Tournament finale Saturday afternoon at The Corral.

The Dolphins opened the match with an 8-3 lead and holding the advantage for throughout the set. The Spartans found a spark at set point with a 5-0 run to steal the game in extra points, 26-24.

The momentum in game two continued in the Spartans' favor with an early lead, 8-1. Jacksonville battled back on a 6-1 run to bring the set within three, 20-17, but San Jose State took three straight points and five of the next seven to capture the second set, 25-19.

No stranger to comebacks, the Dolphins (0-3) battled in the third set and held steady with a two point lead, 13-11. It was two separate runs by the Spartans (1-2s) that made the difference as a 5-1 rally pushed the set in favor of San Jose State, 15-14, before closing out the set on a 6-1 run to close out the game, 25-19, for the match win.

Junior Mallory Mattingly led Jacksonville with 15 kills, while senior Lauren Petersen added 23 assists. Defensively, sophomore Hannah Marchand totaled a team-high three blocks and junior Natalie Wehner recorded 13 digs in the effort.

Mattingly was named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the tournament.

The Dolphins return to action next Friday, Aug. 31 when they hit the road for a doubleheader against Presbyterian and High Point at Kennesaw, Ga.
