Box Score GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University volleyball (1-11) battled hard in the final match of the Gator Invitational, but ultimately fell in five sets to Florida International, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Florida's Exactech Arena.
Junior Mallory Mattingly was named to the All-Tournament Team and finished the day with a career-high 25 kills in the effort.
A pair of 4-0 runs by the Dolphins down the stretch, ignited by five kills and a block assist from Mattingly, gave Jacksonville some footing, but it wasn't enough to comeback from an early 11-4 deficit as FIU took the first set, 25-18.
Jacksonville found its answer in the second set as a 6-1 run early on put the Dolphins ahead, 9-3. The Panthers (7-5) tried to chip at the Dolphins' lead, but a 5-2 streak down the stretch kept the momentum in JU's favor, 20-15. FIU then brought the set within two, 21-19, but Jacksonville put away the final four points – including a call reversal on set point – to even the match, 25-19.
Picking up where it left off, Jacksonville rolled on with a 5-0 run to lead 11-5 and force FIU to use a timeout. The Panthers worked a 6-0 rally to tie the set at 17-17, but Jacksonville went on a 6-1 run of their own to bring the set to game point, 24-19. The Panthers rallied to tie the set at 25-25 before back-to-back kills from Mattingly and graduate student Sara Dyslin put the set away for a 2-1 Dolphin lead, 27-25.
A 6-1 run from FIU gave the Panthers a 10-6 advantage to open the fourth set, and though they battled and chipped away through the rest of the set, the Dolphins dropped the fourth game, 25-17.
Down 3-1 in the fifth, freshman Giao Huynh recorded a pair of kills to bring JU back within one, 4-3. FIU then added four unanswered points to take an 8-3 lead before taking the set and match, 15-7.
Defensively, Huynh matched her season-high with five blocks and junior Natalie Wehner posted a team-high 12 digs. Senior Lauren Petersen finished the day with 39 assits.
Jacksonville returns to action next Tuesday, September 18 when they travel to Stetson to open the ASUN Conference schedule at 7 p.m.
