Men's Soccer Season Comes To A Close At NJIT

NEWARK,NJ – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team traveled to Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night to face NJIT with the goal of clinching a spot in the ASUN Championship in their final match of the season.

The matchup resulted in a tough loss for the Dolphins (5-7-2) as they fell to the Highlanders by a final score of 5-0.

Jacksonville recorded four shots in the first half. Joshua Araujo-Wilson fired the first shot of the night in the 11th minute. It was only a matter of seconds until senior forward Kai Bennett sent the ball high over the net in an attempt to put JU on the board. In the 12th minute sophomore forward Reggie Nicolas had a close call as the ball grazed the post. Junior forward Jose Manzo shot the ball at 15:54 but the NJIT keeper was able to make the save.

NJIT got on the board first at 12:43 with a single handed goal credited to Rene White. White scored again in the 22nd minute with the help of Jose Adames to put the Highlanders up 2-0 over the Dolphins heading into halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second  half White recorded his third goal of the night for NJIT.

Jacksonville put up five more shots in the second half. Senior forward Jesus Colombo contributed a shot 66th that was saved by the NJIT keeper and again in the 74th minute, but the shot was blocked.  Junior midfielder Steven Saunders and Bennett each put up one. Bennett was recognized as the Hodges Mazda Player Of The Game following the match. 

Regsan Watkins back to back goals in the 81st and 83rd minute to give NJIT a 5-0 lead over JU.

The final shot of the night came from junior midfielder Connar Lufkin with 30 seconds remaining in regulation but the ball went out to the right in the final seconds of play.

Jacksonville ends their 2019 season with a 5-7-2 record.
