JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (3-4) suffered some heartbreak on Thursday night at home opposite Western Carolina (3-2), settling for a two-point loss, 96-94, in double-overtime.
The Dolphins were rolling for much of this game shooting north of 50 percent from the floor into the second half and led by as many as 22 points before a late push from the Catamounts spoiled the effort. Jacksonville held leads in both overtime periods but was unable to hold off the hard-charging visiting side in the end. This was the 108th overtime game in program history but just the 13th to advance to double overtime. It was the first double overtime contest for Jacksonville since Jan. 22, 2015.
Junior
Destin Barnes canned a career-best and team-high 20 points on 6-12 shooting from the floor including 5-9 from long range. He pulled down four rebounds and handed out an assist while also going 3-4 from the free throw line. He's the third different Jacksonville player to eclipse the 20-point plateau this season, joining
Aamahne Santos and
Kevin Norman.
David Bell continued his hot stretch by scoring 14 points, collecting 12 rebounds and blocking four shots. It's his fourth-straight game in double figures, the longest such stretch of his career, and his second-consecutive double-double, fifth of his career. The senior is averaging 15.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks over his last four games.
Santos scored 16 points and matched a career-high with six assists. Norman chipped in 13 points and five boards off the bench while
DeAnthony McCallum found his way to 11 points, with much of his damage coming during the overtime periods. Jacksonville put five players in double figures for the first time since Dec. 4, 2018 at Presbyterian.
Freshman guard
Mo Arnold made the first start of his career, replacing
Trey Sides who started each of the first six games. Arnold scored seven points and had six rebounds over 42 minutes of action. He led the Dolphins in court time, just ahead of Santos who logged 41 minutes. Sides came off the bench for three points and four boards with a block.
Back-to-back road trips are on deck now for the Dolphins. First the team will travel up to Buies Creek, N.C. to visit Campbell on Monday, Nov. 25 then a weekend trip to Greensboro, N.C. will follow for a date with North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Nov. 30.
