GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jumping up early and never relenting, Jacksonville University baseball took the final game of the series at UNC Greensboro, 8-4.
Â
The Dolphins (12-8) collected 15 hits on the day, including five for extra bases and got 6.2 strong innings in a start from
AJ Jones (3-1).
Â
"I liked the competitiveness, the resiliency and the toughness to be able to bounce back after such a tough day yesterday," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes. "We really were competitive for 27 outs today."
For the third straight day, JU struck first with a run in the second.
Cory Garrastazu laced a double down the line in right with one out, and
Cory Heffron drove him home with two outs.
Â
The biggest inning of the weekend for JU came in the third. Four consecutive men reached base with one out, started by
Angel Camacho's single, after which he scored on
Scott Dubrule's triple to the right centerfield gap.
John Cassala was hit by a pitch before
Duncan Hunter drove in Dubrule. Garrastazu delivered a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Â
UNCG managed one run in the third to cut it to 4-1, but JU continued to add in the fourth. Leadoff singles by
Reagan Wright and Heffron set up
Ruben Someillan's sacrifice fly after Wright went first to third and it was 5-1 until the Dolphins tacked on two more in the fifth. Camacho's double started the inning and Cassala singled him in. Cassala stole second and scored when Garrastazu finished a 10-pitch at-bat by singling through short to extend the lead to 7-1.
Â
Jones kept the Spartans off balance all day, scattering four hits over 6.2 innings while striking out five and walking three. He stranded three men on base until he was lifted for
Nick Love in the seventh.
Â
UNCG started to chip away late, scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh to cut it to 7-4. In the eighth, two men reached via walks off of Love, but the freshman struck out two in the inning to strand the tying run at the plate.
Â
JU added an insurance run in the ninth, when Someillan doubled down the third base line to start the inning, and an error on
Dakota Julylia's sacrifice bunt allowed him to score to build the lead back out to four, 8-4.
Â
Love picked up his third strikeout of the day to strand two men on in the ninth to close out the win.

Jacksonville heads back to Florida to face the Gators at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Gainesville.
