Jones Dominant as Jacksonville Sweeps Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – AJ Jones was dominant on the mound and Jacksonville University baseball executed with men on early in the game to lead wire-to-wire ina 3-2 win over Lipscomb on Sunday at John Sessions Stadium.

The Dolphins (15-9, 3-0) completed the series sweep of the Bisons, while capturing its 10 straight weekend home victory.

"AJ was phenomenal, did exactly what he needed to do," said Head Coach Chris Hayes. "Pounded the zone with three pitches, kept them off-balance."

"We recorded two fly-ball outs, everything else was in the infield. Great performance."

The day started and almost ended with Jones' (4-1) dominance on the mound. After allowing a one-out single in the first, he did not allow another Lipscomb baserunner until there was one out in the ninth, retiring 24 Bisons in a row, not allowing an earned run in 8.2 innings and striking out 10 along the way.

"It's just like a rush," said Jones about his rhythm on the mound. "Do it, get back, do it, get back, you don't even think about anything.

"When you got it like that, you just keep doing it and it's a good feeling."

While Jones was limiting the Lipscomb bats, Jacksonville was able to strike first for the only time in the series. Dakota Julylia doubled down the right field line with one out in the first, took second on a flyout to center and scored on a wild pitch, the second time in three days he dashed home to steal a run.

With the lead 1-0 in the third, JU added another. Reagan Wright walked to start the frame, and was sacrificed into scoring position by Cory Heffron before scoring on Ruben Someillan's single.

JU made it 3-0 in the fourth when Jacob Southern doubled to lead off the inning, and sacrificed down to third by Duncan Hunter before scoring on Cory Garrastazu's sacrifice fly.

Jones worked into the ninth, getting the first two out of the inning, but with a runner on first via a walk, Josh Martinez reached on an error and Cade Sorrells singled to center on a 3-2 pitch to drive in the first two runs of the game for Lipscomb. Jones was lifted to a standing ovation for Jagger McCoy, who allowed the first runner to reach on another error before inducing a groundout to end the game and pick up his first save of the year.

JU hits the road for an eight-game road trip starting with FAMU on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Tallahassee.
