TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Jacksonville University women's rowing team faced perhaps its toughest test to date this spring when it took on the Alabama Invite on Black Warrior River against No. 17 Alabama and Creighton. The Dolphins claimed four second-place finishes to highlight the effort.
"Although winning is always our number one goal, we had our work cut out for us today competing against Alabama who has recently found success being ranked in the top 20 in the country," head coach
Mike Lane said. "I thought overall today was okay. We learned some things about how we need to race. We had some good, and we had some bad."
The 1st Varsity 8+ squad posted the hottest time of the day for JU, cruising to a second-place finish in 6:41.3. Just behind that group was the 2nd Varsity 8+ whose second-place finish came in 6:59.9. The 1st Varsity 4+ (7:37.9) and the 2nd Varsity 4+ (7:45.2) brought home the other two second-place finishes. All four came behind Alabama.
"The great thing about racing quality crews early in the season is it gives us plenty of time to make adjustments and improve," Lane concluded. "We plan to get back to work Monday morning in preparation for what will be a great weekend or racing next Friday and Saturday."
Up next for JU will be the Sunshine State Invite in Sarasota, Fla. That event will take place over two days beginning on Friday (Apr. 5) and concluding on Saturday (Apr. 6).
