LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (12-20, 5-11 ASUN) saw its 2018-19 season come to a close on Monday night at Liberty (26-6, 14-2 ASUN), 72-58, but were led one last time by senior forward
Jace Hogan who dropped 13 points in his final game in green.
Hogan was joined in double figures by
Aamahne Santos who also added 13 points and
DeAnthony McCallum who canned 11. Not only were the Dolphins without the injured
Tyreese Davis but
David Bell picked a up flagrant 2 foul and was ejected midway through the first half. The Dolphins trailed by just two at that point, but the tide certainly turned at that juncture.
Outside of a 13-0 run for Liberty in the first half following the ejection, this game was close to level throughout. The Dolphins made just two fewer field and one fewer three but were outshot 18-9 at the free throw line to help create the difference in this one. Jacksonville actually outscored the Flames it the second half, 39-38, with much of that damage being done by Santos.
The junior guard scored all 13 of his points in the second half on 5-6 shooting, including a 3-4 clip from long range. Freshman
Bryce Workman played big minutes in Bell's absence and showed good signs of things to come with eight points off the pine to go with a pair of rebounds.
Corey Romich even got in on the action during a late surge by JU. The sophomore scored five points and helped the Dolphins get within nine with just 8:35 to play after trailing by as many as 20 in the second half. But Liberty went into hold-the-ball mode and knocked down a few shots as the shallow Dolphins just ran out of gas.
While the 2018-19 season has come to a close the Dolphins have plenty to build upon heading into next season.
Jace Hogan is the lone senior departing the program after a tremendous career which means JU will return nearly 84 percent of its scoring for the 2019-20 campaign.
