Dolphins Drop Both Games of Doubleheader at FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday at Swanson Stadium and were swept by FGCU.

The Dolphins (21-19, 7-8) lost game one 3-1 and game two 2-1.

GAME 1

Jacksonville got on the board first in game one, plating a run in the second inning with a two-out rally. Cory Heffron was hit by a pitch and Dakota Julylia snuck a bunt down the third base line. Ruben Someillan then walked to load the bases before Scott Dubrule hit a hot shot to short that the Eagles shortstop could not handle, plating Heffron to make it 1-0.

AJ Jones (5-3) was efficient through the first three innings, facing the minimum in part due to the defense behind him turning two double plays. After he stranded men at second and third in the fourth and sat down the Eagles in order in the fifth, he walked the leadoff batter in the sixth. A bunt to the firstbase side got past Jones and FGCU had runners at first and second with no outs. A deep flyout to center advanced the runners and an intentional walk loaded the bases. The next batter popped up for out number two before a double down the first base line cleared the bases and put FGCU up for good, 3-1.

Jacksonville finished the game 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left 14 runners on base.

GAME 2

Game two was a seven-inning contest as scheduled, and started much the way game one did, as a pitcher's duel. Neither team managed a base runner in the first, and it took until the third for a runner to move into scoring position.

Austin Temple (2-2) got a flyout and a strikeout to strand runners at the corners in the third, and fanned back-to-back batters in the fourth to leave another man in scoring position.

FGCU started the fifth with a leadoff single and brought in a pinch runner, whom they bunted into scoring position. A double to right gave the Eagles the first run of the game. After a pitching change to bring in Nick Love, another double made it 2-0 before a runner was caught stealing at third to end the inning.

JU answered back in the top of the sixth. Cory Heffron singled to start the frame, and Scott Dubrule followed that up with a base hit of his own to advance Heffron to third. Angel Camacho poked a single into right to score Heffron and cut the deficit to one, 2-1. But, after the runners were bunted into scoring position, a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat, and JU was unable to get anyone on in the seventh.

Jacksonville does not play a midweek game due to finals on campus this week, and returns to action on Friday at John Sessions Stadium vs. Liberty.
