LYNCHBURG, Va. - Jacksonville University softball (13-32, 1-14 ASUN) took a pair of losses against the ASUN leading Liberty Flames (33-16, 15-3 ASUN) on Saturday in Lynchburg, Va. It was an offensive struggle throughout the day for JU, who failed to score in either game after losing by just a run in the series opener on Friday.
Game One
The Dolphins failed to find their offense in the first game against the ASUN's winningest pitcher. Â Two hits were all JU could muster in the first game, while Liberty recorded 10. Though they failed to score, the 'Phins did put themselves in position to do damage at several points throughout the game. Jacksonville did, however, present their best scoring chance early on.
Sophomore Hannah Roberts represented the first baserunner for the Dolphins after walking to lead off the top of the second. Roberts then advanced to third after Serena Quinata reached on error, but pair of strikeouts that followed would end Jacksonville's hopes of scoring early on.
The Dolphins again found themselves in scoring position again in the top of the fifth thanks to a leadoff double by Abby Genest, who then reached third when Carolyn O'Neal sent a single to left field. The opportunity was spoiled once more when two more Dolphins went down on strikes.
Liberty managed to collect runs in each of the first five innings and eventually ended things early with an 8-0 lead at the end of five. Seana Mora made it through 3.2 innings before being replaced by Haley Holloway. Mora recorded three strikeouts, but was handed her 12th loss of the season.
Game Two
Jacksonville doubled their hits in the second game, but still had trouble making their way around the bases in the 4-0 loss.Â
Alyssa Bilodeau made her second start of the weekend in game two and picked up six more strikeouts to total 12 on the weekend. Of the four Liberty runs to score, Bilodeau earned two. The junior's record moves to 7-15 after pitching a complete game.Â
It was in the top of the third that Jacksonville grabbed two of their four runs. Singles by Holloway and O'Neal had the 'Phins in good position with only one out, but the Flames worked themselves out of the jam and recorded the last two outs of the inning before any runs could score.Â
Serena Quinata reached for a second time today with a double in the top of the seventh, but time ran out on the Dolphins, who now sit 3-3 all-time against the Flames. Makenzie Buss was the other Dolphin to record a hit in game two, her first of the weekend. Liberty's Julia DiMartino picked up her second win of the weekend and 17th overall for the season.
Next, Jacksonville goes across town to take on North Florida (22-19, 4-10 ASUN) in the River City Rumble. The 'Phins will play a double header Sunday against the Ospreys beginning at 1 PM, then a third game at 1 PM on Monday.
