JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a tight game to the final out, Jacksonville University baseball prevailed 2-1 over Stetson on Saturday night at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins' (28-23, 11-9) pitching staff limited the Hatters to just three hits and captured the series with the win.
"We were able to scratch across a couple runs, the big run early, and then it was Dolphin baseball," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes. "Walk, sacrifice, base hit, boom.
"Then we let the bullpen do their thing."
In a night in which the pitching dominated for both sides, the difference was the offensive execution in the seventh.
Duncan Hunter drew a leadoff walk and was bunted into scoring position by
Ruben Someillan.
Dakota Julylia shot the first pitch he saw into right field to score Hunter and put JU ahead for good.
"[Stetson pitcher] had my number all night, and I was just trying to get a pitch elevated in the zone," said Julylia. "Give credit to their pitcher, he had a great night.
"He made two mistakes the whole night and we were able to take advantage of them."
Jacksonville struck first for the second straight game.
Scott Dubrule singled and
John Cassala doubled in consecutive at-bats in the first, before
Angel Camacho drove in Dubrule with a groundout to second to put the Dolphins in front 1-0 after one.
Stetson tied it in the fourth, when a one out walk advanced into scoring position on a ground out and scored on a two-out single to left.
Pitching was the story of the night throughout, with Jacksonville starter
AJ Jones not allowing a baserunner through the first three innings. After allowing the run in the fourth, he sat down the next five he faced over two innings, before walking two in the sixth. He recorded his fifth and final strikeout to end the inning and strand the two men on.
Nick Love relieved Jones in the seventh, inducing groundouts from the first five batters he faced before walking one with two outs in the eighth. He, like Jones, found the strikeout when he needed it, to strand another man on base.
Trent Palmer got the first two outs of the ninth, but also allowed two hits, and was relieved by
Zach Bryant, who fanned the only batter he faced to end it and preserve the JU victory. The staff struck out eight collectively tonight in the win.
Jacksonville looks to finish the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at John Sessions Stadium. It is Senior Day at the park, and the game time has moved up one hour to noon due to the threat of storms later on in the day.
