HIGH POINT, N.C. – In a rematch of the regular season contest in which the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team came out on top, the #1 seed and tournament host High Point found a way to upend the #4 Dolphins en route to a 17-3 decision in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinal, Thursday evening at HPU's Vert Stadium.
"Tonight was as about an unexpected results as I have ever been a part of. While the feeling of tonight will be difficult for me to swallow for months, it doesn't change the love I have for this group of young men," stated head coach
John Galloway after the game. "The beauty of sports is no one will remember the outcome of this game in five years. What they will remember is how seniors like
Eric Applegate and
Zach Crotty made them feel. The seven young men that are leaving this program have made an impact on this program that will never be forgotten. Our locker room is disappointed because we expected to win. That expectation and standard has come from the men who built this program and the senior class who will leave our program better than they found it."
"I also want to commend
Jack Dolan,
Hayden La Vangie, and
Zack Deaken for their fight for 60 minutes tonight. When things were ugly, they never turned their back on the team. That is the type of emotional maturity that will propel us into next season. Our staff will go back to work in the morning, but tonight is about celebrating the seven seniors who left it all out there tonight."
With a hand in all three of Jacksonville's goals, sophomore
Jack Dolan once again made history and finished the season with a new program record 55 points.
Though the Dolphins peppered 16 shots in the first half and 28 total, Panther senior goalie Tim Troutner, Jr. found a way to stifle JU's chances late into the third quarter.
With 2:24 left in the third, Dolan notched his 53 points of the season to pass Ryan Serville, who set the previous program record of 52 in the Dolphins' inaugural season in 2010.
After handing out a pair of assists to redshirt-junior and captain
Evan Tyler (12:03) and junior
Dwayne Mattushik (6:58) in the fourth, Dolan closed out the season and extended the record to 55 points. Dolan also picked up three ground balls while he and freshman
Griffin Corbett posted a team-high two caused turnovers apiece in the effort.
Junior
Alex Giovinco won 11 of 22 restarts at the faceoff X, as he and freshman
Zack Deaken picked up four ground balls each.
Junior
Hunter Sells and freshman
Matt Sageder split time in the crease to close out the game with four saves and two saves, respectively.
The Panthers, ranked 11th nationally by the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, were led by SoCon Offensive Player of the Year Asher Nolting (3 goals, 1 assist) and Hunter Vines (4g, 1a). Troutner recorded 13 saves, with five in the second half to lead High Point to the win.
The Dolphins end the 2019 season with a 6-9 overall record.
