JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team (2-1-1) hosted Presbyterian (0-5) on Saturday night and used some late game heroics ignite the Southern Oak Stadium crowd and steal a 2-1 win.
"I am just so happy for the guys. I give credit to them more than anything" commented Assistant Coach
Thomas Buckner.
The home team recorded three shots in the first half. Freshman defender
Habib Famuditimi got off the first shot of the night at 16:51 and freshman midfielder Jake Duncan- Smith recorded the second at 21:30. The final shot of the first half came from senior midfielder
Redondo Beauplan in the final minutes of play with a brilliant strike that forced the PC goalkeeper to make a diving stop.
The two sides entered half-time scoreless.
Jacksonville quickly opened scoring in the second half, less than one minute into play when
Connar Lufkin recorded the first goal of his season off an assist from
Mason Tunbridge. The Dolphins strung together a number of crisp passes on the ground before one found the feet of Lufkin who converted.
"They stuck with it the entire second half. They stuck with our style of play, our principles, and what we wanted to do. I knew that eventually something would happen for them." Buckner added.
The Blue Hose only goal of the night came from Sergio Pinto in the 64th minute of play. The strike was likely intended as a service into the goal scoring area but traffic in front JU goalkeeper
Matt Levy allowed the ball to slip by unseen for the equalizing tally.
The final goal of the night came at 89:20 when
Jose Manzo laid a perfect service from the left side to the far post where, who else but Lufkin was waiting to one-time the ball with his head to the far post and in. For his efforts, Lufkin is recognized as the
Hodges Mazda Player Of The Game.
"Lufkin being that he scored two, was fantastic in the middle. Every player that was on the field tonight gave their all and gave maximum effort.
The Dolphins will go on the road this week and travel to Macon, Ga. to go up against a familiar foe in Mercer on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. They will then return home on Saturday to host Stetson at 7p.m in their first ASUN game of the season.
"This was team win one hundred percent," Buckner concluded.
