Women's Soccer Takes The Citadel To Double Overtime

CHARLESTON, SC – The Jacksonville University women's soccer continued their South Carolina road trip on Sunday afternoon in their final non-conference matchup of the season against The Citadel.

In their fourth all-time meeting the Dolphins (0-6-2) tied with the Bulldogs by the final score of 1-1.
 
"It was a great performance for us," commented Head Coach Laura Busby.
 
Making several good runs to the attacking zone, JU recorded a total of four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. The offensive duo of freshman forward Olivia Abdallah and senior midfielder Maya Fisher continuously put pressure on The Citadel keeper through the first half.
 
Senior forward Rachel Henry recorded the first shot for Jacksonville at 15:09 and senior defender Danielle Henry came closely after at 27:54 with the second. . In the 30th minute, with the help of junior midfielder Emma Vasquez as the result of another impressive run freshman forward Olivia Abdallah went one-on-one with The Citadel keeper and recorded the first goal of the afternoon and her third of the season. At 33:18 freshman midfielder Shelby Brim attempted a shot after a JU free kick as a result of a foul on the Bulldogs. In the final seconds of the half  Vasquez took a corner kick that just missed, and Jacksonville entered halftime leading 1-0.
 
"We created more chances than any other game so far," added Busby.
 
Coming back into the second half the Dolphins recorded three shots on goal. Junior defender Kylie McCue, freshman defender Rachel Walters and Vasquez each got a shot off.
 
At 61:50 Devyn Nyhart tied the game with a goal assisted by Maria Conteras. After 90 minutes of play with the score knotted at one Jacksonville and The Citadel headed into overtime. This would be the 4th consecutive time the Dolphins' fate would be decided in overtime.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski, who is recognized at the Hodges Mazda Player Of The Game made seven saves on the afternoon and was able to hold off The Citadel from putting away the game in the final seconds of regulation as she made a leaping save to the top of the net to prevent a Bulldog header from getting through.
 
"I am proud of the way we battled through our fourth consecutive overtime match. We will definitely head into conference play with the confidence we needed to get out of this weekend," Busby concluded.
 
JU recorded two shots in the first overtime from sophomore forward Madison Taylor and Henry but could not sneak one past. Jerantowski made another pair of diving saves in the second overtime to secure a tie for JU.
 
The Dolphins will return home to Southern Oak Stadium on Thursday night when they host Liberty in their first ASUN game of the season.
